Finding Time to Ask Paula!

Posted on January 28, 2010 by Paula, under Ask Paula.

This morning we’re introducing a new category to our blog here at The Time FinderAsk Paula!

We anticipate that it will be a good spot to highlight questions (and comments) that come to us in response to blog posts and to our e-zine (which will be firing today a little before noontime ET, by the way)!

We’re looking forward to being able to expand on the already-lively dialogue in our Finding Time Community – and this is a great way to start!

So, to inaugurate Ask Paula, here’s a question from Bruce K. in California:

How do I know if my choices around time really do fit with my values?

What a great question!  This is a topic that Heather Dominick actually touched on in our interview on Tuesday night.

In response to a question about making choices and taking risks, she suggested doing a body scan and noting where your feelings about a particular choice reside.

She went on to say that if you feel the energy of the choice in and around your heart, it is probably in sync with your values and core direction.  If, on the other hand, the feelings are centered in your head, you may be over-thinking and forcing something.

To delve further into this – on a daily or weekly basis, ideally, I’d encourage you to step back and think about your values.

Then also, periodically, pause and assess how you are feeling about your time choices.  Ask yourself:

How do I feel at the end of the day?

Do I feel satisfied?

Do I feel like I’ve accomplished something?

Or do I feel anxious or indecisive?

Do I think about the things I could have done or should have done?

The answer to these questions will tell you if your time choices fit into your values.

Knowing how you feel about your choices helps you see your priorities – and then you can tweak things, to bring them into better sync with your core values!

Do you have questions you’d like to Ask Paula?  Please feel invited to drop me a line – I’d love to hear … and respond!

What if you could find another hour every day? You can! You are invited to sign up for The Finding Time Success Kit. It’s FREE, and it provides you with key tools for your time success! Find Time to Explore Twitterfall AND Sign Up for My Interview with Heather Dominick on Cyber Monday!

Posted on January 25, 2010 by Paula, under Time and Technology.

Finding time to get it all done is a challenge.  How are you working toward success and abundance in 2010? How can I help?  Here are two Cyber Monday ideas to start your week off well!

Let’s begin with a Timely Twitter Tip … because finding relevant content and conversations on Twitter is an ongoing challenge.  Twitterfall appears to be a tool that can help!

Twitterfall is a Twitter dashboard that lets you type in keywords and then displays all the tweets containing those keywords. You can use hashtags, people’s names, you name it!

Enter your term and then, when you click the search button, you’ll see the tweets come falling (that’s where the name comes from) down from the top of your screen. As you explore the feed, you can hover over each user’s twitter name and see some of their key information. At the righthand side of each tweet in your list, you’ll find an array of actions.  With a single click you can retweet, respond, follow, favorite … or do a number of other things  related to that tweet.

Here’s the Twitterfall blog, with a helpful, step-by-step video introducing the basics of the tool.

There are so many Twitter tools available, it can be overwhelming.  I encourage you to check this one out and, if it resonates for you and seems like something that can help you connect more efficiently on Twitter, add it to your repertoire!

Give it a try and let me know what you think … I’d love to hear!

SPECIAL NOTE THIS MORNING! Finding time to succeed, prosper, and experience abundance in your life … that’s something we’ll be focusing on here at The Time Finder as 2010 unfolds! You can kick start your year of abundance with LOTS of excellent insights and ideas about this when you sign up for my interview with EnergyRICH® Entrepreneur Success & Master Coach Heather Dominick. Find Time to Set Goals as You Move Toward Success and Abundance!

Posted on January 21, 2010 by Paula, under Time Choices, Time and Energy.

Finding time to succeed, prosper, and experience abundance in your life … that’s something we’ll be focusing on here at The Time Finder as 2010 unfolds!

Kick start your year of abundance and you’ll receive LOTS of excellent insights and ideas about this when you sign up for my interview with EnergyRICH® Entrepreneur Success & Master Coach Heather Dominick. That’s Tuesday, January 26th … at 7PM ET!

In the meantime, here are 3 tips to help you set your success and abundance goals for the coming year.  It’s so important to align your energies and intentions as you move ahead, so that your time choices can further your dreams as efficiently and effectively as possible!

  1. Ask yourself – how much time have you actually spent creating a clear picture of what you want and why you want it? If you have not seriously reflected upon this important question, or if your idea of what you want changes frequently, your goals will be written in sand.  Give yourself the gift of taking 15 minutes a day for one week to think about what you truly want and why you want it.  Jot down notes.  At the end of the week, you will be ready to set clear goals that truly represent how you picture your ideal life.  You will have created the motivation to achieve that outcome, as well.
  2. Building on Tip #1, examine the outcome you have defined to ensure that it’s realistic. You may find that you need to make it more specific, or you may need to modify it in order to make it come alive in your mind.
  3. Cultivate awareness. This valuable state of mind, encouraged by setting goals, can dramatically improve your life.  Make a habit of looking at your goal, or outcomes you have defined as most desirable for your life, at least 3 times a day.  You may find it helpful to use a timer to set aside 5-10 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner to focus on it.  Doing this will help to ensure a constant state of awareness of your goal, and of why it is important to achieve it.

Once you’ve thoroughly assimilated your goal, you’re ready to work backwards on planning the steps to achieve your goal.  Working backwards prevents you from falling into the common trap of making action steps too big.

Finally, document each action step you need to take to be where you want to be.

Can you see your path to abundance?  Let me know what you think … I’d love to hear!

And don’t forget – sign up for my call with Heather – you’ll be so glad you did!

Find Time for Success and Abundance!

Posted on January 20, 2010 by Paula, under Time After Time, Time and Energy.

Finding time to succeed, prosper, and experience abundance in your life … especially in today’s economic climate … may sound like an out-of-reach aspiration.

But I encourage you to take another look.

Many of us carry outmoded and self-limiting ways of thinking about things like time and money and success.  These are the small but persistent messages that tell us we CAN’T – when, quite likely, we CAN!  They are the inner voices that sap our energy and creativity … hobbling our efforts and diminishing our dreams.

In my work as a coach and teacher, I work with my clients as they become familiar with the negative thoughts and habitual snippets of self-talk that undermine their confidence and drive.  That’s because, once you’re able to see what’s happening, you can develop positive, inspiring and validating messages to counter the negativity.

I am not talking about being unrealistic.  Not at all!  It’s important for your dreams and goals to have roots, as well as wings!

But believe me, you are probably much closer to success than you imagine!

For some inspiring and proven tips on finding time for success by creating a healthy relationship with money (one free of fear and doubt, and rooted in a confident trust that you will always have enough), I am very excited to invite you to attend my FIRST FREE EducationRich and HeartBased Interview Teleseries!

Next Tuesday (that’s January 26th at 7PM) I’ll be interviewing one of my mentors … EnergyRICH® Entrepreneur Success & Master Coach Heather Dominick.  I am so excited to have Heather as my first guest!  She is an incredibly insightful, warm, experienced and engaging person.  She knows all about success, too – and I just know you’ll gain TONS from the call!

The interview is on Tuesday night, January 26th – from 7-8 PM ET.

Heather and I will be exploring topics like how to become an energy magnet, so that you can become successful in life … and Heather will also describe how she tripled her business and income three years in a row.

Are you ready to open to success and prosperity?  Ready to start exploring your full potential … setting aside the negative self-talk that holds you back?  Then join me on this great, FREE call!

What keeps you stuck?  Can I help?  Drop me a line …  I’d love to hear your experiences and thoughts about abundance and success!

What if you could find another hour every day? You can! You are invited to sign up for the Finding Time Success Kit starting with The New Finding Time Personal Boundary Template. Find Time to Fully Own Your Day-3 Tips to Get You Started!

Posted on January 19, 2010 by Paula, under Time Choices, Time and Energy.

Finding time to step proactively toward your time choices and “own your day” is one of the most empowering gifts that you can give yourself every single day (or more often, if you want)!

How often do you hear people say some version of the phrase, “My time is not my own”?  This is a huge misconception – and one that leaves people feeling out-of-control and victimized when it doesn’t need to be that way.  Not at all!  Our time choices are ours to make, no matter what! And the reality is that, if we choose to let others dictate what we do with our time, THAT is a time choice we are making.  Ultimately, it is in our hands.

So how do you find time to fully own your day?  What does that mean?

I like to think of each new day as a blank slate, filled with possibility and promise.  I may have tasks and responsibilities to fulfill in those 24-hours, but how I go about that is entirely my choice.  Here are 3 tips for “owning” your day, right from the outset:

  1. Know yourself. Are you a morning person?  Do you do better at night?  Don’t set yourself up by trying to start your day in a way that just isn’t “you.”  There is no ideal here.  The key is to fashion a routine that works for you and that helps you enter your day positively and proactively, no matter what is on your plate!
  2. Have a plan. Planning is, perhaps, THE key to owning your time choices, not to mention getting traction on accomplishing your goals.  I like to have a plan for each day that I usually start the night before and then refine when I’m ready to start my day.  It can also be very helpful to use the two column method to track what you finish and what you don’t, each day.
  3. Give yourself a moment. It is important to take at least a moment, first thing, to touch base and connect with yourself.  Whatever works for you is the way to go.  If you are a morning person and love to get out and exercise, a walk or run might be great for you.  Or maybe you choose to write in your journal, meditate, work quietly in your garden.

The specific activities that you undertake aren’t so important.  What is VERY important is that you are connecting with yourself.  This starts your day on a positive and proactive note that empowers and energizes you for whatever else the coming hours bring!

How do you start your day?  I’d love to hear!

Find Time by Culling Your Twitter Feed!

Posted on January 18, 2010 by Paula, under Time and Technology.

Finding time to connect on Twitter is, at least in part, a matter of finding the tweeps that you most want to connect with.

As Twitter becomes more and more popular, more and more people use it … for more and more purposes.  That’s not a bad thing at all – but it can mean that your Tweet stream gets clogged up from time to time with tweets that aren’t really relevant to you.

Enter Si Dawson and The Twit Cleaner!  This tool, recently reviewed by Jade Craven on Twitip, will analyze and categorize the people you follow so that you can make more informed decisions about whether or not you want to continue following them.

It combs through your tweeps and sorts them according to various types of “bad behavior.”  Once that’s done, it sends you a report via DM – and then it’s up to you to review the data and make decisions about culling your Twitter feed.  Here are the categories of “dodgy” behavior:

  • Dodgy – spam phrases, @ spamming, duplicate links etc
  • Absent – No updates in a month, or fewer than 10 tweets.
  • Repetitive – High numbers of duplicate tweets or links
  • Flooding – So high volume you can’t see anyone else
  • Non-Responsive – No interaction & those that follow back < 10%

The FAQ Page is very helpful.  I went to it immediately because I saw some familiar friends listed in my report and wondered why.  Here’s what I found:

… it’s important to understand, The Twit Cleaner doesn’t say someone is or isn’t a spammer. It analyses a whole lot more than that. What it does is identify certain types of behaviors. Your friend (or favorite celebrity, bot, etc) is on the report because they behave in ways that are deemed potentially dodgy. Look at the category headings for more information. Of course, this doesn’t mean you should unfollow them if you don’t want to.

To see why someone is on the report, place your mouse over their picture and you’ll see an explanation.

It is fascinating to review the report.  Once you have it in hand, you have a number of choices as to whether (and how) to unfollow people.  It can be done manually, or in bulk.

The report itself is free.  If you are following up to 2000 people, the bulk actions are free, too.  Beyond that, the fees are:

  • Up to 25,000 – $5 USD
  • Up to 50,000 – $10 USD
  • Otherwise – $20 USD

I have found Twit Cleaner a useful tool that helps me find time by culling my Twitter Feed.  Have you tried it?  Let me know how it goes. I’d love to hear!

What if you could find another hour every day? You can! You are invited to sign up for the Finding Time Success Kit starting with The New Finding Time Personal Boundary Template. Find Focus by Culling Your Basket of Time in 2010

Posted on January 13, 2010 by Paula, under Time and Energy.

Finding time and finding focus in the swirl of priorities and responsibilities that surround most of us is a big, big challenge.  Some days do you feel like you are rushing from one task to the next without a clear plan (or the space to pause and make one)?

That’s because time is finite.  If you think of your time as a basket, you can easily see how, when it’s full-to-overflowing, important things can fall out.

In that familiar scenario it’s easy for your goals and values … what makes you YOU … to get lost somewhere in the shuffle.

I was reminded of this yesterday when I read a comment that my friend and colleague Wendy Battles, the Clean Eating Coach, left on The Time Finder.  She was commenting on our post titled “Find Time by Culling Your Basket of Time!” and reported that she had recently taken the difficult step of letting go of a networking group that she loved – in order to find time for other priorities.  While it was a loss, and a challenging step to take, it was also clearly a relief – and allowed Wendy to move ahead and feel more in charge of her time.

Remember … “One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it.” Sidney Howard

Are there things that you could cull from your basket of time as you move into 2010?  Are you prepared to follow Wendy’s lead and put your priorities into action by letting go of something?  You can do it – and you’ll be glad for the enhanced focus and energy that you’ll experience, I guarantee!

I invite you to give it a try.  Make a list and start by letting go of something small … and let me know how it goes.  I’d love to hear!

Find Time to Expect the Unexpected-5 Tips

Posted on January 12, 2010 by Paula, under Time and Energy, Transitions and Time.

Our world is filled with change … all the time!  Finding time to deal with the sudden changes that can present themselves to us is a difficult challenge that is compounded by the fact that, by definition, we are unprepared for them!

What can you do to prepare?  You can establish a base so that when the unexpected occurs, you have a toolbox of skills and responses to draw from.

Here are 5 tips to help you keep sudden change from totally disrupting your time choices, your ability to take care of yourself … and manage your life.

1. Remember that your time choices, and the values that drive them, are yours. Even when your established priorities need to take a back seat to the urgent choices you may need to make, remember that the time choices remain yours.  The more you can own your choices, the less you will feel victimized by your situation.

2. Establish a habit of defining options. Ensure your resiliency by defining options for each of your daily priorities.  This gives you a wider repertoire of priorities, should you to flex in light of something unexpected.

3. Explore adjustments in your personal and work schedules that you can make quickly if you need to. Flexibility is a key skill here! Sometimes our daily list of activities and priorities becomes inflexible. This can be disastrous if sudden change occurs. You can introduce flexibility into your daily habits around time by changing your routines and assessing your reactions to these changes.  It’s really helpful and important to pay attention to this when you aren’t being forced into it by circumstances!

4. Re-examine your personal boundaries. In times of sudden change, your usual personal boundaries may have to flex. Take a few minutes and reflect on those you’ve established. Write them down. This keeps them from becoming unconscious or rigid. By remaining aware of your usual boundaries, you are more easily able to adjust them when sudden change occurs.

5. Be willing to tell others about any sudden changes that affect your usual time choices. When sudden change occurs, don’t bottle it up inside. Family, friends and coworkers only can understand, accept, and support you if you alert them with at least a brief description of any sudden change.

Have you needed to deal with sudden change in your life?  What have you found helpful?  Challenging?  I’d love to hear!
