Boundaries-Use Them or Lose Them!

Maintaining your boundaries is a vital task!

Boundaries are foundational to your success. Whether you’re talking about how you use your time, or how you manage your space, there’s no getting around the fact that boundaries are vital.

It’s your boundaries  that determine what you let in and what you don’t. Your ability to focus on a task is all about your ability to set and maintain boundaries.

So making conscious choices about setting your boundaries is key – and maintaining them is equally important.

Walking the Boundaries on the Farm

One of my favorite springtime chores is walking the boundaries here on the farm. It’s a yearly ritual. We walk the perimeters of the fields, checking the fences and stone walls to see what winter has wrought.  As Robert Frost wrote in his famous poem The Mending Wall:

Something there is that doesn’t love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.

As vital as boundaries are, they require maintenance.

Taking your time boundaries as an example, they need to be revisited regularly because your needs and circumstances are always changing and evolving.

Maybe some months ago you created a time boundary to give yourself space to exercise on Saturday mornings. Now that it’s darker in the mornings it’s hard to get yourself out the door to walk. But the evenings are getting longer, so you can move your exercise routine if you want.

Paying attention to these kinds of transitional shifts allows you to be flexible and re-establish time boundaries. This, in turn, helps you maintain habits and routines that are important to you.

Boundaries erode with time, too.  Whether it’s you or your family or co-workers or friends, humans tend to push against boundaries. Eventually, just like the walls around the farm, some repair work is necessary.

As you check your boundaries you may realize that you no longer need some but want to shore up others. It really is a constant — and a very rich — process. As you engage with it, you increase your ability to succeed exponentially AND you learn important lessons about yourself, too!
