Find Time to Be in Charge of Your Time (Rather than Vice Versa)!

Posted on February 3, 2010, under Time Choices.

Finding time to step up and take charge of your time is the path to learning that 24-hours really are enough!  Rather than feeling trapped by the ticking clock, when you are in charge of your time you live each tick (and tock) to its fullest.  The finiteness of time isn’t something you experience as scarcity so much as a quality that highlights and elevates the importance of each moment!

So, being in charge is all about being proactive and focused, and about asserting and maintaining your boundaries.

My friend and colleague Maggie McCauley recently wrote a wonderful blog post about this.  It’s titled The Simple Secret To Taking Charge Of Your Time and in it she offers lots of very helpful, concrete tips while encouraging us to think in terms of abundance, rather than scarcity, and take charge of the time we have each day!

Maggie includes a list of 12 tips, and notes:

When you are always in a rush, a slave to clocks and watches you are allowing time to manage you. When your day planner is overflowing because you’ve said “yes” to every interesting event or project, it’s all scheduled back to back with no space in between to breathe and life’s “unexpected interruptions” are not taken into account you have given time all the control. There isn’t enough time because you haven’t added in enough space in between events.

I’d like to highlight just one of her tips for you right now – a very concrete and grounding one:  “Learn to time yourself with tasks.”

It’s tip #11, and I think if you try it you’ll find it very eye-opening.  A BIG part of the reason so many of us feel short on time is that we don’t give ourselves enough of it – because we don’t know how long our everyday tasks actually take.  I bet if you try this, you’ll find that you are setting yourself up to be behind, right from your first task of the morning!

Here’s a challenge … pick a day this week or next, and time your activities.  Keep track, and see what you discover!  Oh, and please feel invited to drop me a line – I’d love to hear about what you find!

What if you could find another hour every day? You can! You are invited to sign up for The Finding Time Success Kit. It’s FREE, and it provides you with key tools for your time success! Grab it and see how you can recharge your energy, reduce overwhelm and frustration, and come to learn that 24 hours really ARE enough!

I had not thought about timing myself to find out how much time is committed or not used fully. I save every other Thursday to work done just for me, but often don’t accomplish as much as I would like. I will keep track and see what I discover about the use of that day.

That’s great, Bruce. I bet you’ll find it useful – and would love to hear what you discover!
