The way you use your time is the way you live your life.
Finding time and managing it well is very often a matter of how we prioritize. That’s why strengthening your Priority Power™ is one of the fundamental time tools you can use for increasing your efficiency and effectiveness.
But are you always on board with your own priorities? How fully do you own them? What happens when words like ‘should’ or ‘have-to’ are attached to items on your priority list?
Well, I recently read a very interesting post on lifehacker titled “If You Want to Actually Finish the Tasks on Your To-Do List, Include Why You Should Do Them” that I found at once powerful and fascinating. It draws from an article by Michael Pantalon, Ph.D. in Psychology Today titled “Influence Yourself With a “Why-Do” List” and speaks to the impact that our relationship with ourselves has on our productivity.
Basically, if your tasks spring from your goals and aspirations, and your goals and aspirations spring from your heart, then your productivity is an organic outgrowth of those key connections.
But how do you get there? Well, what these authors suggest is that you ask yourself why this item is on your list to begin with. Frame the question as a positive. Rather than asking: “Why can’t I get this done?” ask yourself “Why do I want to do this?”
This is where you’ll discover your heart’s connection to the task. Or, equally important, you may discover that a task isn’t really important to you – and you can remove it from your list!
As you start sifting through your priorities and asking yourself why, you’ll be enhancing your productivity and making even more of your time!
