Finding Time by Discovering Your Computer’s Capabilities

Posted on October 6, 2008, under Time After Time, Time and Technology.

PumpkinsWhat a beautiful weekend we just had here in New Hampshire!  The frost is definitely on the pumpkin, though.  We have turned the corner and are transitioning toward winter now.

The days are shortening, and we’ll be moving away from Daylight Saving Time on November 2.  Change, as we discussed in an earlier post, is one constant that you can count on!

Another “constant” that I find that I can count on is the fact that my computer can do many, many more things for me than I ever realized!  As a relative neophyte in the world of technology, I am sometimes stymied by its intricacies.

That’s why I was very pleased to receive from a friend, this weekend, a link to a wonderful NY Times article by David Pogue titled “Tech Tips for the Basic Computer User.”  It is full of shortcuts and tips for accessing the power of the technology at our fingertips.  Trying just one or two, I feel like I am accessing the power of my computer – completing tasks much more quickly and finding time for myself!

It takes some practice to get used to using these new tools.  I suggest that you pick out one or two that strike you.  Write the shortcut on a slip of paper and keep it near your computer so that you remember to use it.  Eventually it will become a part of your repertoire!

As you can tell from the comments that follow it, the article just touches the tip of the iceberg when it comes to”tricks of the trade.”  One of my favorites is the tip below.  (It saves me from searching for my reading glasses all the time!)

You can enlarge the text on any Web page. In Windows, press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys (for bigger or smaller fonts); on the Mac, it’s the Command key and plus or minus.

Do you have any “tech tips” you’d like to share?  Click the box where it says “Comments!”  I’d love to hear from you!
