Yesterday I promised you some tips on finding time to find your way when life hands you lemons!
Here are three things that I find very helpful when dealing with misfortune:
First take time and give yourself some space. You’ve just suffered a loss, and you need to honor that fact and the emotions that it brings up for you. This is very important. If you don’t honor the loss, your energy will be sapped and it’s likely that you’ll find yourself stuck, as time moves forward.
Second, put your misfortune into context. Remember what you have not lost! It can be helpful in these moments to run through a list of the things that you value and feel grateful for. This exploration of your values and of gratitude reestablishes your equilibrium.
Third, think about the advice you would offer a good friend. We are often more balanced, gentle, and optimistic when giving our friends advice than we are with ourselves.
The next time life throws you a big (or even a small) curve ball, try using these tips. I’d love to hear how it goes!
