Fitness and You-Apps for Tracking Your Efforts in 2014

Fitness AppsFitness often tops lists of New Year’s resolutions; and fitness efforts also often fall to the wayside fairly quickly as the New Year unfolds.

We’ll be writing more about that soon, but for now, since it’s time for our weekly Cyber Monday tech post, I thought I’d share a few fitness apps that we’ve been reading about here at The Time Finder.

Fitness Tracking Made Easy

If you carry a phone with you (whether an iPhone or an Android) there are lots and lots of options for tracking your movements, and many of them are free. For example, if walking is your fitness activity of choice, then Runtastic Pedometer may be just the thing for you.

Runtastic Pedometer keeps track of every step you take and lets you see whether you reach 10,000 steps/day as recommended. Besides the steps taken this app provides several other metrics such as distance, time, calorie consumption and step rate.

Another multi-platform app that you might find helpful (and even more flexible than Runtastic Pedometer) is Moves.  This app (also available for both iPhone and Android) tracks ALL of your moves throughout your day – and displays them for you.  Here’s how they describe it:

Moves automatically records any walking, cycling, and running you do. You can view the distance, duration, steps, and calories* burned for each activity. The activity tracker is always on, so there’s no need to start and stop it. Just keep your phone in your pocket or your bag.

Your Fitness Baseline

The thing that is particularly helpful about apps like these is that there’s nothing you need to track; it all happens automatically.  Thus, for one thing, an app like Moves will give you a very realistic picture of your daily fitness activities.  And that, in turn, helps you decide where you’d like to invest more effort.

Fitness and Fun

So, let’s say that you’ve tracked your fitness baseline for a couple of weeks and you’ve decided to set some goals for yourself.  Now comes the part where motivation and follow-through are key! Setting benchmarks for yourself and tracking them over time is an excellent way to increase fitness and enhance your energy levels.  And making it fun makes it that much easier to do what you set out to do! It’s the clever combination of fun and fitness that intrigued us about The Walk.  This app encourages you to take more steps by rewarding you with a story.
