Incremental Time-Scale Your Time Choices to Your Needs

Incremental TimeIncremental time is a powerful way to approach your time choices.

When it comes to time, one size doesn’t fit all, and that’s where incremental time comes in.  It’s about taking a mindful and flexible view of your tasks and priorities – a view that ultimately frees you  to plan and allocate your time in the chunks that best fit your needs.

This is something that can vary depending on lots of different variables, including:

  • The complexity of the task involved;
  • Other tasks competing for your time;
  • Your current stressors;
  • Your energy level; and
  • Any other factors that have an impact on you and your time.

Incremental time offers a flexible approach to time planning that requires mindfulness, discipline, and follow-through.  More often than not, we think in regular, rather regimented time intervals.  Whether you choose 15-, 30- or 45-minute slots for tasks, doesn’t it feel like you are often still trying to fit square pegs into round holes?

Well, what if you take a step back and really look at what you need or want to do?  And don’t forget to also consider how you feel about it.  Then your time planning can take in these factors – and you’ll find yourself using time much more efficiently.

Incremental Time for Focus

If you have a task on your plate that requires a great deal of concentration, you’ll want to give yourself time to really dig into it.  And don’t forget that you’ll probably also need time to “enter” and “exit” that particular project.  Giving yourself enough time and space enhances your productivity.

Incremental Time to Overcome Procrastination

On the other hand, what if you have a task that you’re procrastinating about? This is a situation where assigning a small time increment will likely help you overcome resistance and get yourself started.  Once you’re engaged with the task, you can then reassess the amount of incremental time you’ll need to continue your work.

Benefits of Incremental Time Planning

The more you allow yourself to be mindfully flexible with regard to your time, the more efficient and effective you’ll be in your planning.  Here are just a few of the ways that you benefit:

  • Using incremental time allows you to avoid the frustration and discouragement of spinning your wheels and feeling stuck in the face of unrealistic expectations.
  • Scaling your planning to your needs empowers you as you build a track record of perseverance.
  • Consistency creates self-trust and steady success creates confidence.
  • And all of this has a significant on getting tasks done!

How do you view your time? Can you see how shifting to a more flexible stance can help you find focus and get unstuck when you need to?

I hope you find this helpful and wish you every time success!
