LibreOffice offers a powerful suite of free tools.

LibreOffice is a free, open source suite of documents that just underwent a major upgrade. If you’ve ever considered letting go of your Microsoft Office tools, I think you’ll find this interesting.

LibreOffice is a project managed under the auspices of the Document Foundation (TDF),  It offers capabilities similar to what’s available in Microsoft Office. But there’s a big difference – it’s all free.

Wondering what the Document Foundation is? It’s a non-profit organization that promotes open-source document handling software. You can click this link to learn more about the tools being made available by this project.

All of the contributors are volunteers who “believe in the principles of Free Software and in sharing their work with the world in non-restrictive ways.”

LibreOffice-Lots of Tools

What the folks from The Document Foundation have developed is a suite of tools that includes the following components (to name a few):

  • Writer — for word processing,
  • Calc — for spreadsheets,
  • Impress — for creating presentations,
  • Draw — for working with/creating vector graphics and flowcharts.

So, if you want to compare what Microsoft Office and LibreOffice offer, just click this link. It’ll take you to a table with a side-by-side comparison.
