Resolutions or Plans: How Do You Frame Your Goals for 2013?

For many – or maybe most – of us, resolutions boil down to what one person recently posted, very aptly, on Facebook:

Resolutions – A Different Way to See Them

Very often, our resolutions are quite large, and focused on the end, rather than on how to get there.  That’s why I like thinking about the New Year from the vantage point of making plans, rather than making resolutions.

And what I generally do is let my resolution be the endpoint, and then plan back from there.  That way I have a step-by-step process for moving myself from Point A to Point Z … rather than trying to jump immediately to Z.

The temptation with Resolutions is to give yourself a burst of energy and excitement as you envision the final outcome of whatever your goal may be.  And while keeping that goal in mind can be an excellent motivator, it is vital to remember that the actual work of getting there is incremental … and not always inherently exciting.

So developing a plan that builds in lots of self-validation and positive affirmation for each step taken is also a key to success.

But for starters, just step back and take a look at how you are framing your goals for the coming year.  If you have BIG Resolutions on tap, try developing a plan to give you stepping stones for reaching your goal.  And give yourself a pat on the back for each and every step that you take.

I think you’ll find that you are more likely to get from point A to point Z using this method; and you’ll also develop planning and time management skills that will stand you in good stead for ANY goals that you set for yourself!
