Slow Down and Savor Your Time

Finding time to slow down – or to “stop and smell the roses”  - might be advice that feels so familiar that it seems like a cliché.  But there’s a great deal of wisdom there.

It can be a challenge, finding time to be  (more…)

Find Time to Give Yourself Exactly What You Need Every Single Day!

Posted on January 4, 2012 by , under Self-Care Time, Time and Energy.

Finding time to get everything done in any given day can be a very tall order. How often do you feel like you’re running against a stopwatch and depleting yourself in the process?

Don’t you sometimes wish that someone would come along and give you whatever it is that you need in that moment?

Well, the good news is, that “someone” is YOU!

Think about it. You have the power to give yourself exactly what you need every single day. You really do – I’m not just saying that.

Here’s something I’d love for you to try as the new year gets underway:

As you begin each day, spend a few moments with yourself. You could try meditating, going for a brief walk, doing some journaling or stretching – anything that slows you down and puts you in touch with yourself.

At the end of those moments, think about one thing that you want to give yourself as the day progresses. Don’t limit your thinking – all the possibilities are open to you.

  • Maybe it will be something intangible like self-confidence or focus.
  • Or maybe some days it will be something quite concrete like a movie at 7:30 PM, or a piece of chocolate after dinner.
  • Whatever it is, it should be something that you would like to give to yourself based on your connection in that moment.
  • And whatever it is, be sure that you follow through on it!

At the end of each day, check in with yourself. Did you give yourself what you promised? Or did you give yourself something different?

It helps to keep a small notebook and just jot down, each morning, what you offer yourself. Then at night you can revisit your book and write down what you received. You may begin to see some interesting patterns.

When you give yourself exactly what you need every single day, you are building a warm and trusting relationship with yourself. You will notice that everything feels more positive and more possible as you build a track record of self-nurturing follow-through.

This is such a powerful and sustaining practice … I highly recommend it!

As you transform yourself and your relationship with time, consider this:  Are you an entrepreneur, consultant, or small business owner who’s ready to take the next big step?  If you want to learn how to create and to keep a successful business running on your own, then this is for you! “How to Create Credibility as a Freelancer” is a booklet with 70 expert-proven tips that will help you recharge your energy and motivation, increase your visibility, and sharpen those vital organizational and time management skills.

Find Time to Use Your Choices to Move Into Your Power-3 Time Truths

Posted on September 9, 2011 by , under Time Choices.

In our last post we explored the importance of knowing that time is concrete and finite, and of using the time that you have to its fullest.  A key component in being able to make the most of your time and move into you power lies in making choices.

And remember, not-choosing is also a choice, albeit one that is guaranteed to keep you stuck.

So, you really have two choices to make, when it comes to choice-making:

  • What choice will you make and, even more fundamentally,
  • Will you choose or not?

Let’s examine that second, fundamental question more closely.  It is asking you whether you will move into your power by Acting or whether you will choose to not choose – and Procrastinate?

The decision is always yours and yours alone, and it is a powerful one.  Here are 3 Time Truths to help you use your time choices to move you into your power, so you can live your moments as fully as possible:

1st Time Truth:  Procrastinators fall short of the necessary level of commitment to bring about the changes they’d like to make in their lives.  But it doesn’t need to be that way.

The Action you can take to counter Procrastination is to Commit now. Like the Chinese general Xiang Yu in the third century B.C., decisive individuals “burn their ships” as they cross the rivers to new land, to erase any temptation to retreat. Decide now. Commit. Move forward.

2nd Time Truth:  Procrastinators squander their potential by waiting for a better deal.

The Action you can take to stop waiting and start walking your own powerful path is to Engage now. Living each moment as fully as you can and giving everything you have to whatever you are doing is the opposite of sitting on the sidelines.  There is nothing to wait for.  This moment is everything, and the more fully you can realize that, the more fully you’ll be able to live.

3rd Time Truth:  Procrastinators hand over the power of their lives to circumstances beyond their control.

The Action you can take to change that for yourself is to Claim your power now. You are unstoppable when you are willing to invest your energy and heart in the life you value the most. When you truly value your life, you live in real time. You know that your time choices are entirely in your hands and that you, not external circumstances, determine how you use your time.

Do you welcome your opportunity to live your life to its fullest and move into your power?  You see, action and change require commitment.  I guarantee that you will not only find time as you commit to fully exercise your power of choice, you will also create a stronger, more confident self.

What is your next powerful choice to find more time?

Let’s explore time together …

And while I’m on the subject of exploration, transformation and empowerment, are you a solopreneur, consultant, or small business owner who’s ready to take the next big step?

If you want to learn how to create and to keep a successful business running on your own, then this is for you! “How to Create Credibility as a Freelancer” is a booklet with 70 expert-proven tips that will help you recharge your energy and motivation, increase your visibility, and sharpen those vital organizational and time management skills.

Find Time to Really Do Your To Do List -3 Powerful Time Tips

Posted on July 20, 2011 by , under Time Management Skills.

Finding time to complete the items on your to-do list is an ongoing challenge. Sometimes those lists become so challenging in and of themselves that we want to avoid them … and that’s not a good idea!

Have you run into problems with managing these lists for yourself? I have a friend who jots ideas and tasks on scraps of paper and sticky notes, putting them in her date book as the day goes on.  she captures a lot of material that way, but, as you can probably imagine, by the end of most days that date book looks like it’s filled with confetti! Sometimes the notes fall out, or get covered by other notes.

So, yes, it’s a challenge to keep up with it all.

That’s why I encourage any and everyone to take time — even just five minutes — at the beginning and end of the day, to plan, prioritize/consolidate, and review your list (or lists).

Each piece of this process is important, so let’s focus on each separately with these 3 Powerful Time Tips:

Finding time to plan is like scanning the landscape from up in the air. You need to get the lay of the land, note any barriers, and decide on your route. Really, what you’re determining is how you’re going to travel through your day.  This is the most important part of your process – without it you’ll be embarking on your journey without a compass– and I guarantee, you’re going to get lost!

When you’re navigating your day, it’s really important to know where you’re starting, where you want to end up, and the major intersections and turning points along the way.

Having a plan doesn’t mean that there won’t be a need to make changes as the day unfolds. It simply gives you a map. Ideally your map will include alternate routes for any unforeseen contingencies.  You don’t need to go into a lot of detail about those routes, but it’s important (and reassuring) to know that they’re there.

And don’t forget the “Times 2 Rule” when you plan! No matter what the task, it’s good to assume that it will take at least twice as long as you predict.  (And what a gift to yourself, if you end up with a little extra time at the end of the day!)

Finding time to prioritize and consolidate your tasks is another very helpful time management skill to develop. Again, you needn’t spend a lot of time on this. As you look at your plan for the day or your To Do List, highlight the three tasks that you absolutely want to accomplish on this day.

Also, if you’ve got any tasks that can easily be put together, be sure to connect them. This might include things like errands that involve stops close to one another, putting all of your computer-related tasks in the same time slot, etc.

And if you maintain your To Do List or Daily Plan on a computer you can rearrange your tasks as you consolidate and create your priorities.  Having a clean list makes things a little easier and less stressful for yourself.

Last but not least, finding time to review at the end of the day is very important! It gives you an opportunity to tweak your to do list for the next day, adjust your priorities, reflect on any lessons learned, and let go of it all as you had to bed.

Letting go is a wonderful gift that this process allows you to give yourself.  As your head hits the pillow, you can release any worries that you might be carrying, knowing that they are on your list and will be addressed in the morning.  Your sleep will be more restful, and you’ll have more energy as your day begins!

So, are you ready to start really DOING what’s on your To Do List?  Consider giving these 3 Powerful Time Tips a try … and I’d love to hear how it goes for you.

Find Time to Nourish Yourself with a Summer Reverie

Posted on July 5, 2011 by , under Self-Care Time, Time and Energy.

Finding time to look, listen, and touch the moments of our lives can be an elusive goal.

It doesn’t need to be that way, but we often get so caught up in our lists and tasks and goals, and we forget that there is a world of depth and texture inside that is incalculably enriching … and ALWAYS accessible.

Here’s the powerful (and magical) thing about time, as summed up by the writer James Carroll:

We spend most of our time and energy in a kind of horizontal thinking. We move along the surface of things [but] there are times when we stop. We sit still. We lose ourselves in a pile of leaves or its memory. We listen and breezes from a whole other world begin to whisper.

It may take some practice, but any time you choose to be still and focus inward, things open up.  It might be a memory, a long-ago feeling or moment, or a heart connection that warms you.

Whatever it is that comes, know that it is part of you.  It reveals something about your inner terrain … the rich worlds that you harbor.

Summertime, with its soft breezes and slower rhythms, offers a wonderful opportunity to start making these small journeys inward.

I encourage you to dip into the silence and see what you discover.  What images bubble up from inside?  How does it change your energy?

This is a really wonderful way of coming to know and nourish yourself more deeply.  Take the first step today … and you’ll see! (Oh, and the more you do it, the easier and more enjoyable it gets.)

Find Time to Connect in Every Venue and Include YOU!

Posted on June 15, 2011 by , under Time and Energy.

Finding time to connect using the available on-line social venues can be a time-consuming task.  Just today I linked up in two new (to me) places … BranchOut on Facebook, and Visible.me.

It can be great fun to explore the networking sites and tools available on the web.  Furthermore, if you are a small business owner, coach, or on-line entrepreneur, you know that it’s very important to have your name, business information, and products easily accessible for people.  It’s a pretty simple equation:  the more you connect and are connected to, the more SEO clout you have … which then means more connections … and more clout … and so on.

But there’s the time question … how do you find time to connect?   We’ve written a lot about that here at The Time Finder … scroll down for a list of some related posts.

Once you find the time, how do you connect meaningfully?  You see, connecting isn’t just a matter of sharing blog posts and links and auto-tweets.  Connection is a matter of real engagement.

Sound daunting?  Well, I would argue that the key is taking a step back and connecting with YOURSELF for starters. You simply can’t have real engagement, in ANY venue, unless you are connected with yourself.  And the good news is that when you are connected to YOU, engagement won’t be a big stretch.

So here’s what I’d suggest:  Before you next get on-line to visit your Facebook Page or your Twitter account …

  • Take a seat in a comfy chair;
  • Relax your head, neck, shoulders, and hands;
  • Inhale deeply and then exhale, letting go of ant tension that you are holding; and
  • Greet yourself with love.

Sit like that for at least a couple of minutes – it doesn’t have to be long (but you’ll love it enough to want to keep doing it).

Return to your work with renewed energy, self-compassion, insight and ideas. You will be amazed at the boost this simple exercise can give you, as you find time to connect in every venue … and include YOU as the key ingredient!

And speaking of connecting, I am so pleased to share that I am The Official SelfGrowth.com Guide to “Time Management”.  When you visit you’ll find time management articles by experts in the field, along with a vibrant and welcoming on-line community.  Are you inspired to explore time management tips and tools to increase your effectiveness, efficiency and enjoyment?  Then, I invite you to check out SelfGrowth.com and explore the many resources available there.  And don’t be shy – stop by my Expert Page and leave a comment or question … or just say hello.  There are lots of ways to connect … let’s get started!

Find Time to Step into Heart-Based Success!

Posted on May 30, 2011 by , under Time and Values, Time Choices.

Finding time to move from where you are to where you would like to be is a good way to describe success.  I like it because it’s a definition that emphasizes the step-by-step nature of the journey.  It’s incremental – and that’s where the power lies!

And what better time to focus on this journey than on a day like today, as we pause on the cusp of summer, and as “Small Business Month” is winding down.  A time for reflecting … and for making new beginnings.

When I think about what is involved in launching and sustaining a successful small business, I often think of a quote that Connie Ragen Green shared some time ago:

“If you’re willing to do for a year what others won’t, you can live for the rest of your life the way others can’t.”

Plugging away, step by step, is the bedrock of your successful, heart-based enterprise (or any enterprise, for that matter).  And what makes heart-based success different is the added ingredient of stepping back and reflecting … always checking in with yourself to assure that your values and energies are in sync with what you do.  It’s a dynamic, ever-evolving give-and-take between your mind, body, and spirit.

If you are a heart-based entrepreneur, your definition of success has to do with both doing and being – not just one, and not just the other.  I am reminded of a wonderfully direct passage I read not too long ago on the Monday Morning Memo:

We stay too busy to think big thoughts. This frantic busyness, this voluntary slavery to the merely urgent is preferred, I think, because big thoughts make us realize that we are much smaller creatures than we like to pretend.

So heart-based success is measured both by persistence and courage.  There’s the steadiness of sticking to the everyday tasks that must be done to thrive … and the brave willingness to think big thoughts – asking the tough questions and making the tough choices.

Are you inspired to find more time and increase your effectiveness, efficiency, enjoyment … and heart-based success?

Then, I invite you to explore Secrets of Heart-Based Time Management – my chapter in the book I co-authored - Stepping Stones to Success!  In it I share my proven system for harnessing the power of your mind, your body and your spirit to help you explore your patterns, clarify your values, identify and prioritize your goals … and create your path for achieving them.

The in depth interviews contained in this book provide practical and heart-based ideas to get you moving as you embrace yourself and your own uniqueness!  As one reader has said:

In fostering a climate of ever-expanding and deepening discovery, Paula’s system offers solutions that are founded in self-knowledge. They have a resonance and a wisdom that I find to be very unusual in the time management sphere.  Jordy Cornog, Canterbury, NH

Find Time to Learn that 24 Hours Really Can Be Enough: 7 Time Management Tips!

Posted on April 6, 2011 by , under Time Management Skills.

Finding time to get everything done that you need to do AND still have time for the things that matter most can be a difficult path to negotiate.

But it’s eminently doable … because you know what?

There’s a different way to be in your day … and I’d like to share it with you!

Time is concrete and finite … but it really is true that 24 hours can be enough.  It requires that you learn and practice some skills.  And most importantly, it requires that you keep in mind that this is a perpetual process of learning, as you hone and adapt these skill sets to your individual situation and needs.

Here are Seven Timely Tips to help you along your path to heart-based time success!

1. The “Xs 2″ Rule. Always plan for things taking more time than you think.  Estimate how much time a project or task will take, and double it!

2. Develop a system of organization. Take the time to organize your space and your time. If you have a system, you can do anything.

3. “Done is better than Perfect.” If you find yourself consistently repeating tasks, or editing your writing, to get even insignificant details to be absolutely perfect, reconsider your priorities. Fix what is important, but keep the achievement of your desired outcome as your highest priority.

4. Write down or record your ideas immediately when they come to you … otherwise, you may forget them. Carry a small notebook or a small digital recorder with you at all times. This will save you hours of frustration trying to recapture a valuable idea.

5. The way you use your time is the way you live your life. Remember that each of us only has 24 hours in each day.  Each choice about how to use your time “in the moment” matters!  This isn’t meant to increase urgency or add panic to your challenges, but to add a fundamental sense of the very real importance of these time decisions.

6. Set aside one day a month as a “vacation” day. Decide ahead of time what day it will be and note it on your calendar. Then, when that day arrives, use it to do whatever you choose. This habit is guaranteed to rejuvenate your mind, body and spirit.

7. You will not have more time tomorrow. If you do have more unscheduled time tomorrow, other activities will expand to fill it. (See number 1.)  Therefore, resolve to use your time creatively and effectively each day.

Please feel invited to be in touch as you put these tips into action for yourself, I’d love to hear what you think!

Find Time to Stop Skating on Thin Ice

Posted on February 8, 2011 by , under Time and Energy.

When you were growing up, how many of you occasionally heard an adult in your life say, “Careful … you’re skating on thin ice”?  I know I did – and I bet quite a few of you did, too.  And I bet we all had a pretty good idea of where we were headed when we heard that phrase!

Do you ever feel like you are skating on thin ice now?  I mean in your life today?  Not that you’re going to get into trouble with Mom or Dad … but do you ever feel like you’re on a slippery and not-so-sturdy surface?

It’s not a good feeling … and, in fact, can be quite dangerous.

And the root of the feeling lies in losing touch with ourselves.  We get busy.  Lots of different tasks, people and interests clamor for our attention, and we find ourselves going through day after day after day, hardly pausing for a breath.

The longer we go on like that, the more likely we are to experience frustration, overwhelm, and feelings of victimization.  Rather than leading our lives, we are being led by them.  Our nerves get frayed, tempers get short, and tolerance for frustration melts away.  Yes … the ice is getting thin!

And the thing is, it’s not because we are busy that we are experiencing these feelings.  In all likelihood, we’re always going to be busy – that’s not the problem.  The problem is that we’ve let ourselves get lost!

So what that “thin ice” feeling offers us is an important wake-up call.  It’s telling us that it’s time to stop what we are doing and reconnect with ourselves … our warm, human hearts.  It doesn’t have to take a lot of time.  But what it does take is a commitment and a willingness to open and explore and, most importantly LISTEN.  Listen to what your heart has to say.

Reconnecting with your core, your wellspring, puts your feet back under you on solid ground … no more treacherous, thin ice!

If you’d like to learn more Secrets of Heart-Based Time Management I invite you to explore my chapter in the new book that I co-authored titled Stepping Stones to Success. In my chapter I share my proven system for harnessing the power of your mind, your body and your spirit to help you identify and prioritize your goals and create your path for achieving them. I am so excited to offer this unique and actionable information to you!

Through February 21, Stepping Stones to Success will be available to readers of The Time Finder at a very special rate … something you won’t want to miss out on … so click this link to get the details!  The in-depth interviews contained in this book provide practical and heart-based ideas to get you moving as you embrace yourself and your own uniqueness!

Find Time for January’s Time Finder Favorites … and Something Special!

Posted on February 1, 2011 by , under Time After Time.

Finding time for the monthly ritual of reflecting back on last month’s top Time Finder posts is always something that I thoroughly enjoy.  This month, it’s especially special for me, as I am also, today, launching a new book that I co-authored!  It’s called Stepping Stones to Success … and I’ll share more about it in a second.

But first, January’s Top 5 Posts!

The most read post for January was our post titled Find Time to Collaborate Using Google Docs.  As we noted in the post:  “The ability to chat and/or see real-time edits to your documents (without having to refresh your screen) makes communication and collaboration so easy!”  In addition, Google Docs makes simple file-sharing much easier.

Second on our list was another “Time and Technology” post titled Find Time to Extend Your Blog’s Reach with Tweet Old Post.  Have you tried this Twitter tool yet?  It offers a really easy way to keep your blog content circulating.

Another technical time-saving post came in at #3 on our list.  Find Time to Drop Everything .. in Your Own Dropbox explores Dropbox and the ways you can use it to share material and save time.

Coming in at 4th and 5th on our list were a post titled Find Time to Explore Your Heart and Mind with Mindmapping and another titled Find Time for Some Writing Tips from Yours Truly in which I share about being a featured case study on the EzineArticles.com Blog … along with sharing some tips!

And now … as we enter a new month, I am really happy to share about my book launch!

Stepping Stones to Success addresses key life challenges and success solutions in areas like time management, life balance, and spiritual health. It includes chapters by 19 experts who “share strategies for mastering business, life, and relationships.” I am honored to be included among renowned authorities like Deepak Chopra, Jack Canfield, and Dr. Denis Waitley.

In my chapter Secrets of Heart-Based Time Management I share my proven system for harnessing the power of your mind, your body and your spirit to help you identify and prioritize your goals and create your path for achieving them.   I am so excited to offer this unique and actionable information to you!

Through February 21, we are offering Stepping Stones to Success to readers of The Time Finder for a special, low price.  Don’t miss out – click this link to get the details!

Find Time to Reflect and Recharge – How Has 2011 Been Going for You So Far?

Posted on January 28, 2011 by , under Time and Energy, Transitions and Time.

Finding time to make the most of transition times is a great skill to develop and hone.  The beginning of a new year offers us a wonderful “moment” to do this, as we are generally very much aware that we are in transition.

The reality is, however, that we are in transition all the time.  The more that we can accept (and even embrace) the fact that change is constant – the more we can harness the power of transitions for ourselves.

Power of transitions? Absolutely!

Any transition time, such as the end of a month, offers the opportunity to reflect and recharge.  If we choose to, we can give ourselves this important gift by taking the time to make a conscious transition.  How?

Well, first look back over the past month.  Relax and look, without filter or judgment, at whatever bubbles up about that time:  Scanning the vista, you’ll see:

  • Events,
  • New tasks taken on,
  • Tasks completed,
  • Anything that stands out.

Then, take a look at your calendar and To Do List to refresh your memory.  If you keep a journal, it would be helpful to page through that as well.  The goal is to give yourself a good sense of the terrain of the past month.

Now that you can see the terrain, it’s time to survey the landscape more closely.  Here’s where you ask yourself 3 Questions to Help You Reflect and Recharge:

  • What did I accomplish this month?  (Make a list and CELEBRATE it!)
  • What did I learn this month … and how will I use it next month?
  • What is one thing from this month that I am going to let go of next month?  (At the end of the coming month, you’ll want to review this and see how you did.)

You may want to add to this list of questions, but it makes for a great start.  What I love about the process is that it sends you into your new month feeling positive, validated, and actually LIGHTER, because you are looking at what you can let go of.

Do this BEFORE you ask yourself about things you want to accomplish or focus on in the coming month.  You work hard and have no lack of tasks and projects.  So how about lightening your load, at least by a factor of one, as you step into February?

Give yourself the gift of some time, over the next 3 days to reflect and recharge … and please drop me a line to let me know how it’s going for you – I’d love to hear!
