Time Boundaries 101: Password Protect Your Precious Time!

time boundariesTime boundaries are key to your productivity and your time success, whether you are a student, an entrepreneur, a small business owner, or anyone with a to-do list that is longer than the hours in your day!

In our always-connected, information-saturated world, time boundaries can be hard to establish and even harder to maintain.  That’s why I was intrigued by a recent post I read on lifehacker titled “Cure Your Smartphone Addiction by Password Protecting Your Apps

Time Boundaries – What Are They?

Time boundaries are like a good, sturdy wall or fence.  They keep things in, and they keep things out.  And you decide what stays and what goes.  If you spend a lot of time on your computer, then this is a venue where you might want to consider establishing some time boundaries to help keep you focused and on track.

Time Boundaries and Passwords:

Time boundaries can be established using passwords to slow you down before you pursue an online activity or open up a site that is a distraction for you.  What password-protected access can do is, at the very least, slow you down so that you think about your decision.  And that may be just enough to alter your impulse and help you maintain those key time boundaries.

Nuts and Bolts of Maintaining Time Boundaries:

If you’re working in an environment that uses apps, there are (of course) apps that you can access to manage your password protection strategy.  If you primarily work on a PC or Mac, a tool like Last Pass can be used to manage your passwords and how they work for various sites.

Time Boundaries – The In’s and Out’s!

Remember, time boundaries aren’t just about what you keep out, but also what you encourage or let in.  If you use something like Last Pass, for example, you can set it up so that you are automatically logged into the sites that are key to your productivity and time success.  By the same token, you can set it to NEVER automatically log you into sites that are a distraction.  (That way, you have to slow down and remember those passwords … or even better, look them up!)

Maintaining clear and strong time boundaries is essential to your on-line success and to your sense of satisfaction as you navigate your day.   You may find that password protecting your time boundaries gives you the space you need to be as productive as possible.

So, I suggest that you consider trying this idea out for yourself.  And if you’re a blogger, small business owner, consultant, or entrepreneur who would like to learn more about creating and maintaining a successful business, then this is for you!
