Time Management 101: Jump-Start Your Time Success with 7 Timely Tips!

Posted on January 17, 2014, under Time Management Skills.

Time Management TipsTime management is the art of finding time in your singular and precious life for the things that are most important to you.

It requires planning and discipline; and the rewards of following through on your time management plan are palpable and powerful!

That’s because time is the medium in which we do everything.  It is concrete and limited, our time is.

By that I mean that there are 24 hours in every day – no more and no less.  And as time passes, it is gone, like the flow of a river. I love the following saying by Heraclitus (with apologies for the archaic and limiting pronoun usage):

No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man.

That is true of time, too.  We are ever changing, as is our situation.  And the way we use our time is the way we live our life … moment by precious moment!

So, below are 7 powerful time management tips to help you live your moments as fully as you can by using your time wisely and well.

7 Timely Tips for Your Time Management Success

1. Implement the Times Two Rule.

Always plan for things taking more time than you think. Estimate how much time a project or task will take, and double it!

2. Develop a system of organization.

Take the time to organize your space and your time … and then maintain your gains! If you have a system, you can do anything.

3. Done is better than Perfect.

If you find yourself consistently repeating tasks, or editing your writing, to get even insignificant details to be absolutely perfect, reconsider your priorities. Fix what is important, but keep the achievement of your desired outcome as your highest priority.

Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing. ~ Harriet Braiker

4. Write down or record your ideas immediately when they come to you.

Otherwise, you may forget them. Carry a small notebook or a small digital recorder with you at all times. This will save you hours of frustration trying to recapture a valuable idea.

5. The way you use your time is the way you live your life.

Remember and really assimilate the fact that each of us only has 24 hours in each day. Each choice about how to use your time “in the moment” matters! This isn’t meant to increase urgency but to underscore the importance of every single time choice we make.

6. Set aside one day a month as a “vacation” day.

Decide ahead of time what day it will be and note it on your calendar. Then, when that day arrives, use it to do whatever you choose. This habit is guaranteed to rejuvenate your mind, body, and spirit.  Self care is your responsibility and THE foundation for your ongoing time success!

7. You will NOT have more time tomorrow.

If you do have more unscheduled time tomorrow, other activities will expand to fill it. (See number 1.)  And, bottom line, you don’t know what tomorrow will bring! Therefore, resolve to use your time creatively and effectively each and every day.

I hope that you find these 7 timely tips helpful, and would love to hear what you think about them.  Which one really resonates for you right now?

To your time success …

Thanks for the tips! I try not to put things off as what’s the point, they’ll only niggle at the back of your mind!

In the new year, one thing I want to get better with is time management.I think your tips will definitely help me. I need to really remember that done is better than perfect. I am a perfectionist and I know that slows me down.

I so agree, Sophie! There are few energy drains as debilitating and insidious as the uncompleted task!

Good ideas here!

Hi Nikki –

I have my struggles with perfectionism, too. It’s a challenging issue, but one that you can certainly make inroads on. Working to uncover the messages that drive my perfectionism was something that I found very helpful. When you can see their roots, those messages really lose their power.

Here’s to your time success!

I like No 5. The way you use your time is the way you live your life. The concept of time as you’ve demonstrated is so true. Live each moment, fully and the best way you con.

Hi Francene – If I had to pick a favorite that would be mine, too. It sums everything up, really. Each choice counts, from the seemingly smallest to the largest. Many thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights – and I hope your very special (and generous) weekend offer on Amazon goes well!

I'd love to hear what you think!
