Timers Help Hugely When You Set Time Boundaries

Why am I writing about timers today?

Well, first, let’s step back and take a look at the importance of time boundaries in your life. You’ve a better chance of staying focused when you know how long you need to be on task and productive.

First, know the terrain.

When you know how much time you have planned for a task, you’re more likely to stick to your plan. And what if you leave the time undefined?

Well, then it’s likely that one activity after another will overrun its allotted time. This leaves you falling further and further behind.  And that’s a sure recipe for stress and frustration.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though.  This is where timers come in.

Buy yourself a small timer.

Timers are available in all shapes and sizes. You have one on your phone. You can set up timers on your computer. And of course, there are lots of stand-alone timers available, too.

Whatever type of timer you choose, use it to remind you when the time allotted for a planned task has run out. This is especially helpful for things like computer work. It’s so easy to get caught up in tasks and lose track of time.

Stay focused.

Using timers is a very big help when it comes to focus. My timer allows me to really immerse myself in whatever I am working on.

I don’t worry about losing track of time.  I know that the beeping of my timer will bring me right back to the moment when my time is up.  Then I’ll move on to my next task.

Timers help you be productive.

When I use my timer to help me maintain my time boundaries I am more productive, without a doubt.

Sticking to my planned boundaries also enhances my self-trust.  I, as well as others in my world, know that when I set a boundary I’m going to follow through.

This boosts my self-discipline and self-esteem. It also enhances the cooperation that I receive from others when I communicate a boundary.

There are so many benefits to using this small, practical tool. So, I encourage you to give timers a try.

How will you use a timer today to stay focused and on track?

  1. Hi Paula, once again, a great tip! I used to use a timer and will start using one again–I’m hoping that will help me leave the office when I had planned to. The mindfulness bell app is great and so is the online mindfulness timer or mindfulness bell.
All best to you and the community!

  2. Hi David —
So good to hear from you. All the best to you, as well, and here’s to leaving the office when planned! (And thank you for the tip about those apps.)
    Paula
