Working smart means knowing HOW you work best!

Working smart is all about making the most of your time. And while time tips can help you on that front, the most important element in working smart is knowing how, when, where and why YOU work best.

Your work style is unique to you. So observing yourself as you move through your day is the perfect way to become more familiar with it.

Earlier this week, I shared a post about a Chrome Extension you can use to organize your browser tabs and observe your on-line habits. Observing your work style really isn’t that different. It’s a matter of gathering data. Once you have it, you can then make more informed choices as you move through your day.

Working Smart: 3 Tips to Get You Started

So here are 3 tips to help you as you set out to get a handle on your work style:

  • Observe yourself without judgment. If you bring self-critical energy to your self-observation you aren’t going to see your real work style. This is a huge set-up, because you’ll see instead what you think you should be doing. Working smart isn’t possible when its foundation is built on unreality.
  • Observe yourself for a long enough time. The longer you give yourself to observe your work habits, the more you’re going to learn. Unexpected things may emerge. Perhaps you’ll learn that you work better in the early morning — or late at night. You may notice particular distractions that regularly trip you up.
  • Keep observing as your work habits evolve. This is a continual process, not a one-shot deal. You adjust your work habits based on what you observe and this, in turn opens new opportunities for learning. This is particularly important because it takes into account the fact that you are continually changing. Working smart at age 27 is very different from working smart at age 46 or 65.

Your time success is founded in the intersection of self-knowledge and your time management skill set. It’s a back-and-forth process, and the more fully you engage in it, the more you’ll learn and benefit.
