The way you use your time is the way you live your life.
Then, as the weeks and months unfold, we slowly lose touch with what those goals were – and what had motivated us in the first place. It’s a familiar process, and can be very discouraging.

One of the keys to realizing your goals is making sure that your goals are truly meaningful to you. This can be complicated, as we live in a world where we are bombarded with information and ideas – often taking the form of things that we “should” be doing or aspiring to.
Does this have a familiar ring? The world tells us, with great frequency, what we ought to feel is important. And if we don’t step back and think about it, it is very easy to take on goals that we don’t really feel a heart connection to.
And if these are your goals, then you are setting yourself up to fail.
For finding the pathway to your heart (and from there to your goals) there are few guides more reliable than Pema Chödrön. That’s why I was so pleased to come upon a timely repeat of an interview that Bill Moyers did with her some years ago.
One of the things that she discussed in this interview was turning off external stimuli AND quieting the mind in order to open to what life has to offer.
What she encourages is, to my mind, something like tending the soil to ready it for planting. Before you put in your garden, you pull out last year’s roots, stalks, and weeds. The space created offers a fertile place for planting new seeds.
Weeding out the ‘should’s’ and the ungrounded, unreachable aspirations leaves you open to the emergence of your goals. And it’s your goals that you are most likely to accomplish.
These are the goals that resonate in your heart. As a gift to yourself, in the quiet between December 25th and January 1st, how about going into a deeper quiet, and letting your goals come to the surface?
