Managing transitions in your life…
Finding time to make transitions in a planful way isn’t always possible. Indeed, as the tragic events in Houston painfully illustrate, sometimes powerful events topple the best-laid plans.
But some transitions are predictable. And when you take the time to plan for them, you’ll be all the better for it.
Back to school
A great example of this is the back to school transition. Each year, here in New Hampshire, the appearance of yellow school buses on the country roads announces that back to school time is here. Whether you have prepared or not, the day comes.
So, if you want to ease this transition and make the beginning of the school year as pain-free as possible for yourself and your children, here are some ideas to consider…
Start Early
This is probably the most important tip. And it can be broken down into some intermediate steps. These include:
- Buying needed supplies,
- Attending school events,
- Adjusting your routines gradually, and
- Starting to let go of some of the things that you love about the summertime before you absolutely have to.
So, for example, to start adjusting your routines, a week or so before school starts, you might start going to bed a little earlier and waking up closer to the time you need to get up during the school year. Encourage your kids to do this, too. That will be a challenge, but any inroads will help.
The more everyone gets their bodies into the gradual habit of starting a little early, the less of a shock it will be on the first day of school.
Transitions, Discipline, and Planfulness
It’s a little late to do that this year, but it’s an example of an excellent way to ease into any new routine.
Moving through any transition requires discipline and planfulness.
- Your planfulness enables you to recognize and honor both the losses and the gains.
- Your discipline helps you to let go and do what you need to do to move ahead.
It’s not too late to use these ideas as you transition into this new school year — or anything new in your life. So, here’s to your time success, and don’t forget, I’d love to hear how it goes for you.
And here’s more…
