Boundaries help with social media work.

When you’re using social media, whether it’s for your business or your personal life, you really need to have strong boundaries.

So today I want to walk you through some foundational boundary-setting skills.

Setting boundaries is about focus. And it requires that you learn to be proactive about your time choices.  The most important thing about the boundaries you set around your social media time is that they enable you to use that time in a way that is consistent with your priorities.

So, how are your boundaries working for you?

Do you have enough time for yourself and what you need to do? Or do you need to tweak your boundaries?

Here’s a good place to start — try doing a survey of your online boundaries.

Begin by taking a sheet of paper. Think about the boundaries you have set for yourself when you’re online and list them on the paper. This is your baseline. What does this tell you? Do you need more?

Boundaries 101

Boundaries around time are those commitments you make to yourself to ensure that you meet the many different kinds of demands that come your way each day. Some are personal and some may be related to your work. Are there times when you are busy and do not want to be disturbed? If so, a boundary, previously communicated to your family or colleagues, would be to close the door to the space in which you are working.

Are there times when you are busy and need to maintain your focus? If so, a boundary is exactly what you need to help you stay focused while you’re on your computer.

To make it easy for yourself, predetermine how long you want to stay on-task and use a timer to set your time parameters. Be sure, then, to stick with your plan. And when your timer goes off, you can give yourself a reward. Follow-through, along with positive reinforcement, are both vital here, whether you are dealing with other people or maintaining your own internal boundaries.

With these tips in mind, add any additional boundaries that are important to your social media success. What stands out?
