Breathe Through Your Stress — See How Quiet Can Carry You

Ireland's Eye
Breathe through…

What do I mean when I advise you to breathe through your stress?

After all, you breathe all the time.

And what does breathing have to do with stress?

Well, as a general rule, finding the time you need for yourself when you are at your busiest can very often feel impossible. “How can I shoehorn in one more thing?” you ask.

So when you’re so busy that you feel you can’t find a moment, finding time to breathe is not only a vital self-care skill, it is a key element in optimizing your energy and, quite simply, getting things done.

It isn’t an indulgence. It’s a matter of practicality and good management of your time and your energy.

Breathe through whatever overwhelms you.

When you are already overwhelmed and your to-do list stretches to the horizon, how do you make time to pause for a moment of simple self-care? Quiet time is revitalizing, but putting the brakes on to make space for it is a challenge.

Here are 3 tips to help you create that space for yourself:

  • First, really work to let go of the notion that this is unproductive time.  It is precisely the opposite.  Stand this notion on its head and make your breathing time a top priority.
  • Second, know that this doesn’t need to involve a LOT of time.  I advise taking 1-3 minutes several times a day.  It is wonderful if you can find more time to breathe quietly, but make this a minimum.
  • Third, chunk your tasks into time increments.  Whatever span you decide on, say 45 minutes, include time to breathe through stress as part of it. Depending on your preference you can have this time at the beginning, end, or middle of your task.  The key is to include it.

It transforms your time and energy.

As you incorporate this quiet time into the fabric of your daily routine, you’ll be amazed at the profound benefits that you experience.

  • You’ll feel more calm, relaxed, and grounded, no matter what is on your plate.
  • And you’ll also probably find that creative ideas and solutions to problems bubble up through the silence.

Try it, and discover what a powerful and energizing part of your day a few moments of quiet breathing can be.

How will you start to incorporate this into your self-care repertoire, starting right now?
