Challenges and Choices — Here’s Where You Make Your Lemonade

Challenges and lemonade…

Life challenges crop up everywhere and present us with hurdles, large and small. Whether it’s a small annoyance or a major upheaval, we are constantly making choices about how to manage challenges.

And beyond simply managing, you also make choices about how you learn from your challenges. How do you find the gems that are scattered amongst the difficulties?

Indeed, after you’ve dealt with the immediate issues, if you want to go deeper, you ask “How can this be useful in my life?”

Challenges Everywhere

On the larger, global stage, there are challenges at every turn. Whether it’s threats to peace or the onslaughts of weather events or wildfires, hard times are experienced all over. Difficult choices are being faced by thousands upon thousands of people in every moment.

How do you keep from being overwhelmed? How do you respond and find meaning?

Sometimes, when devastating events occur, we want to ask why? There’s a temptation to try to assign responsibility — as if someone or something were to blame.

This is a misunderstanding of the word responsibility in my opinion.  And it’s very destructive.

The more useful way to think of the word is to see it as the ability to respond. This puts enormous power into your hands, both in the short and the long-term.

Here’s where the lemonade comes in…

Indeed, it is less the cause of your difficulties than your response to them that matters.

If your response is to welcome any and all opportunities to learn and grow and change – as opposed to succumbing to the temptation to feel like a victim – it makes all the difference in the world.

That frees up your energy. It empowers you to fix the problems that you can AND to learn from your situation, no matter what.

To approach hard times as opportunities is not to deny or minimize their devastating impact.  There is no denying that.  But it is vital to recognize the power that you hold – the power to transform reality and make meaning with your choices.

So, how do your choices affect your experience of reality? I’d love to hear.
