Cleaning Out and Letting Go — How to Free Yourself This Spring

cleaning out excess expectations
Let go of the excess and thrive.

Cleaning out and letting go are definitely phrases that I associate with springtime.

As the world turns toward a new season, my thoughts turn toward personal rituals of renewal.

And sometimes that means cleaning out and letting go. It’s an important activity, both relative to ‘stuff’ and to our inner lives.

Think of it as spring cleaning for your mind, if you will.

You can’t reach for anything new if your hands are still full of yesterday’s junk.

Cleaning out rituals…

The concreteness and power of this activity is something that I always look forward to on the farm.

As the warmer days arrive, we open windows to fresh air. We open to the light as it stretches farther and farther into each evening, and breathe in a sense of renewal and rejuvenation.

The energy is contagious. And I like to expand the concept of spring cleaning. So I let it include not just clearing out winter’s detritus and hanging out the clean sheets to snap and flap in the warm spring breeze, but also cleaning out old habits and thoughts that trip us up and keep us stuck.

Start here, always:

As with any spring cleaning, what’s first necessary is a pause. Think of it as something as simple as an in-breath. You stop, step back and survey the lay of the land. Just let yourself just-see-what-is.

Maybe clutter catches your eye. Or maybe it’s some habits that you’re ready to let go of.

That’s the thing with clutter and habits – they become so embedded that we don’t even notice them. So it’s important to pause and take in your landscape as if you’ve never seen it before. That way you’ll notice some of the things that are tripping you up and need cleaning out.

Once you know where you are and what’s around you, then you can begin to think about making changes.

Start small so you don’t get overwhelmed. And be sure to validate your efforts at each step along the way. Whether it’s clutter in your kitchen or clutter on your to-do list, a ‘small steps’ approach will move you steadily toward your goal.
