Clutter in your life isn’t just what you see in your space.
Indeed, this is a challenge that trips you up and slows you down in many other areas, too. Maybe your schedule includes more appointments than you can realistically deal with. Or maybe it’s your to-do list that places more demands on your energy than you want to face.
Today I’d like to take a look at addressing some of the ways that the clutter in your life leads to procrastination. And then procrastination, in turn, adds to your clutter and, ultimately, your overwhelm.
And the good news is, it doesn’t need to stay that way. So, read on for 3 timely tips about how you can clean up procrastination clutter in your life, or avoid it altogether.
1. Look and see.
If you’ve transferred one task to the next day’s list for more than three days, stop for a moment. You are procrastinating on that task. So that’s your first big step — seeing what you’re doing. Procrastination can quickly fill your to-do list with these tasks that get passed from one day to the next. And that leads to feelings of discouragement and frustration. So, what next?
2. Make a decision.
If the task you’re procrastinating about can come off your list with no consequences and no regrets, delete it. This is a quick and easy way to remove some clutter in your life. It also relieves pressure. However, if there are consequences or you’ll be sorry if you don’t complete the task, then make it your first priority of the day. This breaks the cycle of procrastination. AND it still lets you remove an item from your list. Whenever you accomplish a task that you’ve been procrastinating about, you’re going to feel a significant lift in your energy. This is a nice added benefit.
3. Review and revise.
It’s also important to carefully review your to-do list for any tasks you may have left off. While this may seem like the opposite of decluttering, it’s vital because it assures you that you can rely on your list. Things that you have neglected to include will eat away at your energy just as surely as an overwhelming list will.
Feeling immobilized by the scope of the challenge that your to-do list presents can certainly compound the procrastination problem. So following is one more idea for you to consider.
Your Bonus Tip:
For the next week, record the amount of time needed for each task that you complete in your day. Use this as a resource when you create your to-do lists. It can clarify how many and what kinds of tasks you can realistically finish in a single day. That way, you can remove impossible expectations from your list, along with the clutter they create. This leaves you with more space to focus on the positive and celebrate how much you accomplish. That, in turn, feeds your energy and enthusiasm as you move ahead.
Remember, when you start letting go of your clutter, whether it’s in your bedroom or on your to-do list, you will find that your energy is freed up in all sorts of ways. So, how are you going to get started on this? What will be your first step today?
