Clutter Taking Over? Root It out With 3 Timely Tips!

Clutter can be conquered!

Are you overwhelmed by clutter?  Maybe it’s your in-box.  Maybe it’s your To-Do List or your kitchen cabinets.  Or maybe it’s your goals and priorities.

Whatever way you slice it, clutter is confusing, discouraging, and a major energy-drain. And clutter is a lot like weeds in your garden; it smothers and chokes out  whatever you were trying to grow!

So I suggest that you think of yourself as a master gardener, as you survey the things that are cluttering your space and your time.  Imagine the new potentials you can open up for yourself as you clear away the non-essentials.

Here are 3 Gardening Guidelines you can try right now.  As you get started, keep in mind that clearing clutter is one of the surest and straightest routes to decreasing your stress while increasing your efficiency and effectiveness.

BONUS HINT:  Strong images are very helpful for gathering your energy, clarifying your intention and focusing your resolve, especially when you are working toward a goal that may be new for you. So before you start, envision the end result.  Picture how you’d like your space or your time to look and feel.  When you feel your energy flagging, you can always come back and refresh yourself with the vision of your goal, knowing that step-by-step, you’ll get there!

Okay, now that you have visualized your goal, what’s next?  Implementing these 3 Gardening Guidelines will clear out the space and time clutter that saps your energy and chokes your potential:

  • Divide the job into sections. If it’s discouraging to look at your situation as a whole, change your perspective. Adopt the philosophy of the wise gardener. You know that you can’t weed your whole garden in a single afternoon. So what do you do? You divide it into sections, and clear out a piece at a time.
  • Start with the easiest challenge. It might be tempting to take on a big project because you think that’s the path to the most progress. But you actually move ahead faster by starting small. Think of it as building muscle rather than straining your back.  (If you have ever thrown yourself into gardening after a lengthy hiatus, you know exactly what I mean!)

So you might begin by de-cluttering a small part of your To-Do List or calendar.  Omit one or two activities you’re ready to let go of.  Or maybe try clearing a small area in your house – a drawer or a countertop. Once you’ve de-cluttered something, you’ll experience the results – and that helps fuel your next effort.

  • Maintain what you’ve done as you move forward. You are working to create a new system, so maintenance needs to be a new habit. As you incorporate this change into your routine, you create a solid base and build on your progress.  Think of the garden image:  After you clear the weeds and admire your work, you might add mulch to discourage new weeds from taking the place of the old.

As you chip away at the chaos that clutter creates, and find more time and space for yourself, you will be amazed to see what emerges! That’s because clutter not only clogs your time and your space, it clogs your energy, your creativity, and your confidence, as well.

Of course, letting go of habits is hard. And clutter is nothing if not a habit! But give these tips a try, knowing that if you don’t expect magic, that creates the space for magic to happen!  Start experiencing changes as you approach your clutter with steadiness, curiosity, and compassion.
