When you create reflection points you give yourself touchstones throughout your day.
But what do I mean by reflection points?
Well, finding time takes time. Time management takes time. It may seem obvious, but for many of us it isn’t.
I remember talking to a friend some months ago about meditation and how powerfully it can reduce stress. Her response? “If I had time to meditate, I wouldn’t need to meditate.”
The time management tips that I write and speak about all require time to implement. Time is precious, unrepeatable, and finite. That’s why it’s so important to make conscious choices about spending it.
Create reflection points…
Building reflection time into the rhythm of your life is one way to enhance your time choices. What is a reflection point? It’s a moment in your day, or week, or month, when you pause and reflect on how things are going.
- Are there goals you’re doing well on?
- Things you meant to do but haven’t gotten to?
- Relationships that need tending?
- Accomplishments to celebrate?
You can focus on one thing or several, work with a journal or list, it’s entirely up to you.
The great thing about using reflection points is that they put you back in charge of your time choices. As life gets busy, it’s easy to start going from task to task and lose sight of the big picture. Pausing at a reflection point gives you the chance to ground yourself again in your values and your goals. It gives you a place for making changes and making a new beginning.
Your reflection points can be as frequent as you like. The more you use this time management tool, the more I think you will find it a helpful and refreshing pause.
So, how do you use reflection points in your life now? What sorts of things do you reflect on? Are there changes you’d like to make, starting today?
