How often do you pause to really listen to the messages that you give yourself about your time?
When you really listen, you learn so much.
But you have to slow down, focus, and really listen to hear those messages.
Like looking at a map of the terrain, before setting out on a journey, it’s the first step toward making more realistic time choices for yourself.
Really listen to really hear…
In order to begin to recognize the important landmarks and signposts on your map, you need to hear what you are telling yourself about your time. These are the messages that provide the backdrop to your daily living.
They shape what you do, what you see, and what you feel about your day.
And often they are entirely hidden.
Uncovering What’s Hidden:
Words are powerful, and when their messages are hidden, the can truly be dangerous.
This is why it is so important to cultivate habits of attentiveness. The language that we use offers us sure clues to the feelings, values, and old scripts that we may be working from, to our detriment.
- Do you hear yourself using words like never and always when thinking about time patterns or recurring tasks?
- How do you feel when you give yourself this frame to work from?
- Are there particular phrases that you hear yourself using when you feel stressed?
- When you have a block of unstructured time, how do you describe it to yourself?
- What inner voice is most often active when you are thinking about your time?
- The Critic?
- The Victim?
- What kinds of words might your Inner Adult or Inner Nurturer use?
The language offers very useful hints about how you are likely to spend that time and how you’re likely to feel about it. Once you begin to hear what you are saying to yourself, you will see places where you can make changes that will shift your perspective, boosting your energy and effectiveness.
The power truly is in your hands. What will be your first step to start wielding it right now?
Here’s more help…
We all have voices that chatter at us throughout the day. The Inner Critic is one of them. Learning to recognize (and counter) this destructive voice is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. You see, the Inner Critic is a negative, debilitating and constant presence in your life. And it’s not just the words. It’s the judgmental tone, the rolling eyes, and the scolding wag of the index finger. Beyond sapping your energy and confidence, your Inner Critic robs you of time and profoundly distorts how you see others and how you feel about yourself. So, what can you do?
