Find Precious Time by Creating Some: Make an Appointment with Yourself!

Time is precious. And finding time is just about the best thing going, don’t you agree?

Wouldn’t you love to find an hour or so, right now?

What would you do with it?  I bet the ideas are already pouring in.

But what if you didn’t have to find that time?  What if you could create it for yourself?

Whose time is it anyway?

Think about it.  As you navigate your day, do you feel like your time is yours? Or are you more apt to feel as if time is a raging river and you are being carried downstream, just managing to keep your head above water (if you’re lucky)?

It doesn’t feel good, does it?

I know – I’ve had days like that.  You go to bed at night wondering what happened.  It feels like life and time are in charge of YOU, rather than vice versa.

It’s your time — and it’s precious.

So, the really good news is that there is nothing to keep us from changing that for ourselves. It takes choice, discipline, and persistence. But each of us can turn the tables on stress and overwhelm and start making time for ourselves right now.

By learning to define, establish, and maintain time boundaries.  I suggest that you start with something small, and preferably pleasurable – something like a walk at the start of your day or a hot bath at the end.  It really doesn’t matter what it is – it’s the act of setting that boundary that is so important and life-changing.

Whatever it is that you decide to do, make a promise to yourself to follow through with setting the boundary.  Tell others, if your boundary is going to have an impact on them.  I suggest that you frame it as an appointment, both with yourself and with others, to underscore its importance.

Follow-through is key.

Next, when you follow through on your appointment, savor the time that you have created, and validate your choice.  Give yourself a pat on the back.

As you practice this more and more, you will find that the rest of your time begins to feel different to you.  You’ll feel more on top of things.  Possibilities will open up.  As you approach each day you’ll be less stressed and overwhelmed. No longer reactive to circumstance, you’re more in charge of your precious time and your precious life.  You might even start feeling like 24 hours really can be enough.

So, why not make an appointment with yourself for later today? Leave your desk and go for a 15-minute walk.  Come back and tell me what it was like. I’d love to hear.

And here’s more for you…
