Find Time for Avoiding Cyber Scams This Cyber Monday!

Finding time for shopping (or standing in line) on Black Friday may not be your cup of tea.  But Cyber Monday and the ease of on-line shopping may have a greater appeal.  Does it for you?

Cyber Monday is a relatively new phenomenon.  The phrase originated (according to Wikipedia) in 2005 and is now used pretty ubiquitously to refer to the Monday after the USA celebration of Thanksgiving.  According to the Wikipedia post …

In late November 2005, the New York Times reported that “The name Cyber Monday grew out of the observation that millions of otherwise productive working Americans, fresh off a Thanksgiving weekend of window shopping, were returning to high-speed Internet connections at work Monday and buying what they liked.”

As much as Cyber Monday can be a time-saver, it also offers fertile ground for scams.  In a piece titled “Avoid Cyber Monday Scams” the site Mainstreet.com offers some excellent advice about the scams that are out there and how to protect yourself from them.  And in a post on NY1 titled “Don’t Fall Prey to Cyber Monday Scams” Michelle Park lists 7 tips to help keep you safe while surfing and shopping.

One basic tip that’s important to keep in mind is to check your credit card usage often during this season.  Also, your credit card company may offer you the option of setting an upper limit on your credit card purchases.  If a purchase beyond that limit is made, your company will send you a notification that your limit has been surpassed.  This won’t stop your own, legitimate purchases; however, it will quickly alert you to the possibility that something fishy is going on.

On-line shopping can be a wonderful time saver; but taking some basic precautions is very, very important so that you can keep your personal information safe and enjoy a scam-free holiday season!
