Find Time to Follow Through: 3 Tips for Building Trust and Creating Success!

strengthFinding time to follow through on your plans and commitments is a matter of managing your time choices and your time boundaries.

Sound simple? In some ways, it is.  But as with so many things, interruptions, competing priorities, others’ needs, and unexpected glitches can dislodge your intentions and make follow-through a challenge.

What are the consequences of not following through on a commitment?

They can include missing a deadline and losing a bonus or a promotion.  Less concretely, but perhaps more far-reaching consequences have to do with the erosion of trust.  When trust has been shaken, it can be rebuilt, but until it is, the ripples affect your relationships and subsequent activities.

3 Tips

Here are 3 tips to help you follow through on your promises, so that you are consistently building trust and creating success for yourself:

1. Don’t make commitments lightly. Before you accept an assignment, set a deadline, or make any sort of a promise, pause and think it through. If you don’t have time to make an assessment in the moment, you can usually say, “Let me think about it and get back to you.”  This gives you the space to make a grounded choice.

2. Once you have made a commitment, add it to your to do list and estimate how much time you’ll need to follow through.  Set a start time and remember the times 2 rule so that you build in extra time for unexpected interruptions.

3. If your commitment requires uninterrupted time, plan your time boundaries. Let the people who will be affected know about your time boundaries ahead of time. Explain the need and then enlist their support. Be respectful and clear — and know that you have an assertive right to set the time boundaries that you need.

These 3 tips will help you assure that you are well-positioned to follow-through on your commitments.
