Find Time to Learn About the Recent Google Algorithm Changes and Their Impact on You!

Finding time for what is called SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an important aspect of the marketing plans for many on-line businesses.  However, SEO needs to be coupled with real value in order for your business to thrive.

That’s the message that Google’s recent search algorithm change was aimed at underscoring. Introducing the change on their blog, here’s what Google said about their intention:

This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.

Content farms are one of the targets of this change by Google.  Content farms are described in Wikipedia as follows:  “In the context of the World Wide Web, the term content farm is used to describe a company that employs large numbers of often freelance writers to generate large amounts of textual content which is specifically designed to satisfy algorithms for maximal retrieval by automated search engines. Their main goal is to generate advertising revenue through attracting reader page views.[1]

However, some internet companies are crying foul and asserting that they were wrongly caught in the crossfire.  Chris Knight, of EzineArticles.com has written a very helpful blog post outlining the impact that this change has had on his site, as well as illuminating the processes they have in place to review/ensure the quality of their content … along with changes they are undertaking to further support these efforts.

There are lots of lessons to be learned from this recent change by Google.  The biggest one, I think, is that while SEO is something that any on-line business needs to be aware of and working on, it’s more important to invest in old-fashioned good quality, no matter what your product may be.  As Inder Sidhu recently wrote in Forbes Magazine, in his article titled “The Worst SEO Mistake You Can Make“:

For the foreseeable future, SEO technology will remain a valuable business tool—but one that you should keep in perspective. Putting too much stock in what it can do for your organization is the worst SEO mistake a company can make. Contrary to promises, SEO technology will not provide you a sustainable, competitive advantage. For that, you’re going to have to focus on business basics, including your innovation, prices and operational excellence.
