Find Time to Move by Being Still

ContemplationFinding your own, authentic path forward in life often requires finding time to be still. This paradoxical fact has always fascinated me.

I recently read a post by Alice Vlietstra on her Life Attractions blog that helped illuminate why this is so.  The post is titled “Freeing Yourself from the Prisons of the Past:  Mindsight.”  In it, Dr. Vlietstra explores some of the fundamental ways that our minds and our bodies are connected, and how much power we hold in our hands, as we make choices about what we focus on and how we live each moment.

Along these lines, I recently Tweeted the following quotation:

Whatever we do lays a seed in our deepest consciousness, and one day that seed will grow.

Your choices count…

Our early experiences, our choices, all contribute to the content and quality of our relationships, our aspirations – each and every of our moments.  One thing builds on another.

Yet this process doesn’t need to have the flavor of inevitability.  The more we make choices to be slow down, be still, and work to be mindful about the seeds that we plant, the more we can shape what grows!

What I love about Alice Vlietstra’s post is that she illustrates this very concretely.  It’s a physical fact as well as a spiritual truth:

… the brain continues to develop both new connections and perhaps new neurons throughout a persons life. The connections among neurons determine how mental processes are created. Experience shapes neural connections in the brain, reshaping the mind. Interpersonal relationships and self-reflection thus foster this ongoing growth of the mind.

Being still creates a path.

Isn’t that fascinating?  In our stillness – in our choices to be mindful – we are forging new pathways in our brains.  In our stillness we are creating change at the most fundamental and authentic level!

Can you make more time for yourself to do this?  Remember – the way you use your time is the way you live your life.

Please drop me a line – I’d love to hear how you work on this in your life!
