Finding time to connect and share information can be made considerably easier when you use the available social networking tools. Many or most of you are probably familiar with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Maybe you have also checked out tools like Tumblr, StumbleUpon, Digg, Technorati and Delicious.
Each one offers slightly different capacities and each has its own loyal followings. If you are engaged in work that requires getting the word out on the web, it is a good idea for you to be familiar with these venues and to maintain a presence in as many of them as you can.
I recently read a post on Mashable congratulating Reddit for hitting a major milestone: surpassing 1 billion monthly page views! I confess that, while I have seen Reddit as a sharing option on blog posts and news items for many years, I have never made myself familiar with it. That Mashable story piqued my interest, though … and so I started exploring Reddit.
Basically, like Digg and others, Reddit is a site where users can submit links and vote on items (either up or down). The more “up” votes an item receives, the higher up on the Reddit page it moves. But users are not limited to just the main page. They can create their own “subreddits” that appeal to a specific niche. There are lots and lots of these sub-groupings, creating small communities within the larger group.
There is also, on the Reddit site, a comprehensive Help page with a list of FAQ’s, helpful introductory information about good reddiquette and, of course, the Reddit Blog!
I invite you to start exploring Reddit for yourself. Find a niche … or create one. It looks like a great place to connect. Let’s look for each other there!
