Finding Time to Follow Through on Your Priorities – The Role of Assertiveness

fenceYesterday we wrote about finding time by clarifying your external values and then basing your time priorities on them.

Today I’d like to share one of our finding time tips that speaks to what’s often the next step in this process … employing your assertiveness skills to help you keep to those priorities!

TIP

Assertiveness is one of the most powerful tools you possess to safeguard your time.

ACTION STEP

If your priorities are often overruled by other people’s demands, learn how to set and maintain boundaries. Explore templates that walk you through the steps.

How often do you have a well-planned list of things that you want to accomplish, only to have others’ priorities come in and (seemingly) steal your time?  It can be a very frustrating experience.  While you certainly can’t eliminate unexpected demands, you can definitely develop and use time boundaries to minimize the kinds of interruptions that needn’t be tended to immediately.

Sorting this out is a learning process.  What is key to remember is that no one can steal your time.  You are always making your own time choices – even if that choice involves letting someone else be in the driver’s seat.

I invite you to peruse the posts in the Time Boundaries category here on The Time Finder.  For now, I’d emphasize that it’s important to recognize that you need time boundaries if you are serious about moving toward your goals, whatever they may be.  Learning to be clear, friendly, firm, and assertive in communicating and maintaining these important boundaries will serve you well in finding time to follow through on your priorities.

Have you tried setting some time boundaries for yourself?  How did it go for you?  I’d love to hear!
