Finding time and developing new habits when you’re undergoing transitions is a frequent challenge in our world today. Some transitions are unexpected and some are predictable.
All transitions require flexibility, planning, patience, and discipline.
So, right now we’re just a few days into the Daylight Saving Time transition.
Transitions affect everything…
Have you noticed the different “feel” to your days? The mornings are darker (and maybe that means it’s harder to get going). The evenings are lighter (and maybe that means that it’s harder to come inside and focus on tasks you used to do in the evening.) While the changeover in clock time occurred in an instant, you are still in transition.
Making a successful transition often involves the development of new habits. Aspects of your wintertime routine probably no longer make sense. Now that the light has shifted, you may need to shift some of your habitual activities, too.
For example…
Exercising outside after work may make sense as the evening expands – whereas exercising in the morning at the gym worked through the shorter winter days. In my article Finding Time – 3 Strategies For Building Successful New Habits Guaranteed to Find You Time I offer some practical ideas for identifying new habits that you want to develop, and then putting them into practice.
Another good idea for managing predictable transitions is to develop and keep a template for making the transition from year to year. That way, lessons learned can be used and built upon, easing future transitions considerably.
