Finding Time to Play Nice! Your Web Content, SEO, and Google Penguin

Finding time to stay on top of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a core function to pay attention to if you’re an on-line entrepreneur or small business owner.  And if you’ve been working on-line for awhile, you are probably well aware of the impact that Google’s algorithm changes can have on your ranking and, ultimately, your business success.

That is why it is so crucial to keep up with the changes that Google makes.  Currently, that means learning a little bit about Google Penguin.  There’s an awful lot of information out there, and it’s challenging to sift through it all.  Suffice it to say that the expressed aim of the Google Penguin update is to improve the search experience, focusing on high quality content and weeding out spammy, low-quality material.

What I have done here is to compile some resources that will help you identify possible red flags signaling that your on-line material may not play well with Google Penguin.

“… What I didn’t realize was that moving the entire list of files would make all of them live: including all the test index pages I’d saved over the years. Suddenly, the web was being flooded with about a dozen ever-so-slightly different versions of my index page. Not a good thing!

Of course, once they all got indexed the Googlebot choked. And – just as Google has outlined time and again – one page was allowed through and all others got clipped by the duplicate content filter. They may still have been indexed, but they were filtered out of the rankings. In this case, the only thing that eventually ranked was a YouTube video on one of the test pages. Internal pages from the site showed up in the SERPS, but not the most current index page.”

  • “Google Penguin Update: Don’t Forget About Duplicate Content” by Chris Crum on WebProNews offers comprehensive information as well as helpful specifics about duplicate content and Google Penguin.  “Duplicate content seems like one of those that could get sites into trouble, even when they aren’t intentionally trying to spam Google. Even Google says in its help center article on the topic, ‘Mostly, this is not deceptive in origin.'”  This article includes multiple videos created by Google that address quite a number of Penguin-related questions.

  • Finally, here’s an interview by The Publishing Insiders with Search Engine Optimization Expert Susan Gilbert from BlogTalkRadio about the impact of Google Penguin (and of Google Plus) on SEO.  The interview begins with some very helpful information about issues with hacking, phishing, and malware, and gets into SEO at about the 32-minute mark.
