When you let yourself feel, you see more clearly.

It’s a fact of life that when you let yourself feel you free up energy that you otherwise won’t have access to. But many of us forget that in times of high stress. We are often tempted to try to push past our emotions.

However, we ignore them at our peril.

No one ever wants to be dealing with disaster. But it’s something we all need to be prepared for, as COVID-19 is reminding us right now. So, when confronted with sudden or overwhelming change, one key coping strategy is to take a step back. Give yourself time to feel whatever you feel about what is happening or has happened.

Let yourself feel…

You’ll notice I didn’t say “explore your feelings.” No, I simply am saying “let yourself feel.” There’s a big difference.

You can take time to explore later, but in the heat of the moment, it’s vital to just take the top off in a safe setting.  This helps move you to a place where you’re able to think as clearly as possible as quickly as possible.  

When you take the top off and let yourself feel, you give yourself access to your best problem-solving abilities. This, in turn, helps you meet whatever challenges arise.

Feel then look around.

Once you have done what you can to clear the air for yourself, it’s important to quickly assess the situation, and address any pressing challenges and problems. Take care of what you can immediately and then prepare for whatever the next step might be.

And as you sort things out, keep in mind that you may well need to take moments here and there to safely vent feelings that come up. You may experience frustration and loss, fear, anger, you name it. If left to fester, your feelings will only grow, distorting your perspective and hampering your problem-solving and coping abilities.

Whenever you let yourself feel, you release pressure and can then return to your practical problem-solving with more clarity and positive energy.

Attitude of Gratitude.

In the midst of unexpected change, there are always things to be grateful for. It’s hugely helpful to actively look for these things and make time to assimilate and appreciate them.

When you reflect on what you are grateful for you create a nourishing base of positive energy for yourself.  This is a vital and affirming touchstone that can sustain you through turmoil as you deal with whatever is confronting you.

3 Things…

It is also remarkably helpful to open yourself to the process of unfolding change.  Your focus will shift and narrow to what lies straight ahead at first.  Don’t fight that.  As time moves forward, your vista will widen again.

Here are 3 things that you can count on, even as you  feel like your world has been turned upside down:

  • With each moment, the impact and ramifications of what has happened will be felt, like ripples on water.
  • With each moment you will have new challenges and opportunities to respond to.
  • And with each choice you make, you shape the next moment.

When dealing with big upheavals it’s helpful that they actually occur as a moment-by-moment evolution. The changes are unsettling and may take you in directions that you’ve never have imagined. It happens a step at a time, though. And you have choices along the way. Remaining as open as you can to this process is an empowering gift you can give yourself.
