Getting to Yes by Saying No — How Boundaries Help

Gazebo

Getting to yes begins with no.

Getting to yes, when it comes to what’s important to you, can be a challenge. And that’s where saying no comes in.

That’s because other things have a way of, well, getting in the way.

Indeed, finding time for the things that matter most is always a matter of giving yourself the space and time to follow through on your priorities.

I like to use the metaphor of a basket to help visualize time.  And when your basket is full to the brim, adding one more thing will topple some of the contents onto the floor.

Getting to Yes in Your Life

Because time is finite and concrete, finding time is nearly always a matter of saying no to one thing, in order to say yes to another.  If you don’t make a conscious choice about what you say yes and no to, circumstances will dictate that choice for you.  Things will haphazardly fall by the wayside, and your priorities will be lost as you fall into a reactive stance, entirely at the whim of whatever presents itself.

Needless to say, your stress level will skyrocket, and your productivity will plummet.

There is another way.

It involves learning to use time boundaries to regain control of your time and your life. The path for getting to yes is a matter of developing your boundary-setting skills. When you say no to a lower-priority task or demand, you make a choice. You decide what stays in your basket of time, and what is removed, either permanently or temporarily.

The power is yours, always.
