Google and Twitter can be powerful friends to small business owners and on-line marketers, as any SEO expert will tell you.
Combining the two amplifies and extends what they each can do alone. That’s why I’ve been interested to follow the renewed partnership between Google and Twitter – one in which Twitter gave Google access to all of its Tweets.
For an idea of just what this means, check this site – which gives you a picture of tweets sent in real time.
What the partnership with Google means for Twitter users is well-summarized by Karen Yankovich in her practical, hands-on overview that appeared on the Solo-E site titled “Twitter and Google: 5 Best Reasons to be Tweeting.” Addressing the significance of the Google-Twitter connection, she notes:
What this really means is your social media content will start to play a much bigger role in your SEO. Having a Twitter feed that is fresh, updated often (click here to read my post on how often I recommend), and foundational in regards to your brand, will go a long way toward extending your reach and moving you up in the ever-present battle for search engine list recognition.
As many have pointed out, a big part of what this development means is that material you share via Twitter will now be available via their Google searches to people who are either logged out of Twitter or who do not have accounts at all.
Paying more attention to your Twitter feed is an excellent way to make the most of the Google-Twitter partnership as it unfolds. (Click to Tweet)
When you tap a tweet that comes up in your Google search, you’ll be taken right to that tweet on Twitter. So, your social networking efforts are likely to have increased importance when it comes to SEO – that’s the basic take-away from this new partnership.
So what does this mean for on-line entrepreneurs? Well, making the most of keywords and hashtags that you use in your tweets seems like a must.
As well, keep in mind that what you tweet will remain available via Google long after you’ve tweeted it. That underscores the importance of thinking carefully about the content you present. It becomes part of your on-line profile in a more visible and permanent way than before.
As Karen Yankovich notes:
Because of the fact that your tweets will be accessible via Google, as a business owner you must now be very clear on: your business why, who you serve, and how you help them, now and in the future. Get clarity on that now because what brands your business today may not be how you want to brand it in the future unless you stick with your foundation. Stay focused on those 3 questions and what you tweet about today will still be relevant when someone pulls it up in a search engine list far into the future.
It’s not entirely clear how this will all play out as we move forward, but paying more attention to your Twitter feed is an excellent way to make the most of the Google-Twitter partnership as it unfolds.
