Gratitude and You – The Transformative Power of Thankfulness

Woodland Gratitude

Gratitude energizes you, no matter what.

Gratitude is in the air. As Thanksgiving approaches, those of us who live in the United States prepare to celebrate what we are grateful for. For many it’s a day of reflection, of family gatherings, and of thankfulness.

But why do we reflect and appreciate in this way just once a year? I wonder about this a lot, because gratitude has such transformative power every day, not just on its designated holiday.

So, what I’d like to focus on in today’s post is the way that gratitude affects our experience of time. Let’s get started with a brief visualization.

Gratitude Visualization

Imagine yourself walking along a quiet country lane.

It’s a beautiful, soft, October day. The beech trees have all turned and the gold of their leaves shimmers in the autumn air. Dark hemlocks dot the forest, adding contrast to the brilliant gold of the beeches.

You pause to look around, breathing in the smell of the leaves and of the nearby fields. A single leaf falls to the forest floor.

You slow your breath, inhaling and exhaling in rhythm with your heart’s beat.

You let your heart swell and expand with gratitude as you feel your aliveness and enjoy this simple moment of silence and beauty.

When you start walking again, you feel different – calmer, perhaps – softer, larger, more connected. You continue along your way, filled with the knowledge that each time you do this, you are changed. You are deepened.

Yes, Gratitude Changes Everything

This is what an attitude of gratitude brings. It is simple and always accessible to you. And it is also as profound as just about anything in this life.

When you open your heart to gratitude you also open to each moment and everything that it brings. This, in turn, transforms your experience of time. It helps you slow down. Sometimes it is so powerful that it stops you in your tracks!

I like to spend some time each day, jotting down things that I feel grateful for. Try this for yourself, as you make your way toward Thanksgiving Day, and every day.

I’d love to hear how it goes for you – what you discover – how it affects your experience of time.

And you know, time is pure potential. You decide how to use it; and once you do, it’s gone.  That’s why it’s so important to build on your best time choices.
