Busy times like the holiday season are fun AND they can strain relations, compound confusions, and end up leaving everyone on edge. That’s why how you treat yourself becomes especially important right now.

It’s enormously helpful to choose to step away from the daily drama long enough to collect your thoughts and restore your peace of mind.

Treat Yourself to a Quiet Sanctuary

No matter what is going on around you, you have the power to create space for yourself. Sometimes it might be a large space of quiet. And sometimes you may just have time to treat yourself to a few deep breaths and a stretch.

No matter what, these pauses help you stay grounded and self-aware.

3 Tips for Powerful Self-Care

Here are a few tips to use. As you treat yourself with steady regard, you’ll find that everything looks and feels different.

So, make this part of your daily routine.

  • First, tune into the swirl of colors, sounds and fragrances that you find most restorative. Be as specific as you can. If you feel stuck for images, try glancing through a calendar or travel magazine to jump-start your imagination.
  • Next, practice evoking your inner space. Use as much rich detail as possible. Start by setting boundaries so that you won’t be disturbed as you do this. Then, set the stage. If soothing music or a recorded visualization helps you travel within, keep it on hand. Perhaps your touchstone will be as simple as a poem or a photo. Breathe deeply and enjoy a luxuriant stretch. Let the cares of the day float away for right now. You can attend to them later.
  • Take this inner path to quiet self-care as frequently as possible. This takes discipline, AND it gives you enormous power. To start, set aside at least ten to fifteen minutes daily. See if you can do this in the same place and at the same time each day. This helps you establish an internal rhythm that your body rises to meet.

As you create well-worn paths to this quiet sanctuary of yours, you’ll find that you can treat yourself to this peacefulness on the spot, anywhere.
