Knowing Where Your Time Goes Doesn’t Need to Be a Mystery

Knowing where you time goes is so important.

Knowing where your time goes is an important part of your time management plan.

But do you sometimes feel like knowing where your time goes is a mystery? This makes planning and finding more time difficult.

It’s profoundly disorienting. And ultimately, it’s like trying to set out on a journey when you don’t know where you are right now.

Knowing where your time goes…

So, finding your time baseline is a necessary first step in managing your time and your time choices more realistically.  But how do you do that?

One excellent idea is creating a time diary to track how you spend your time each day.  It’s very important to be accurate and comprehensive in documenting your time.

And if you’re going to be accurate and comprehensive, you need to make sure that you aren’t being negative or judgmental. Instead, view this as an opportunity to learn your current way of working. Once you’ve accomplished that, you are in a position to put in place clear steps to better manage your time.

Track everything

So, when you’re keeping a time diary, it’s very important to set aside self-criticism and jot down everything that you are doing.  Track time spent on tasks, and time spent in-between tasks.  It’s often that “in-between time” that gets lost in the shuffle. And that time holds treasure troves of information.

Tracking your time in this way will not only help you be more productive; it also reveals what you are valuing in your life right now.  You are giving yourself the opportunity to see what you are choosing by default so that you can make more conscious choices going forward.

Remember, the way you use your time is the way you live your life. So, how do you think you are spending your time now? How will you start tracking it? And what changes do you want to make, starting today, in the time choices you are making?
