Find Time for Free Software on Cyber Monday

Finding time to access excellent free software is definitely time well spent.  Often there are free versions of expensive, ‘name brand’ products that will do the job for you just fine – and save you money in the process.

To learn about some of the available free software, I suggest that you take a moment today to explore this article from Michelle Shaeffer that was posted on Solo-E last month.

In “Free Software for Online Business Owners” Michelle shares an annotated list of some of the top free software products that she uses, ranging from Audacity (for audio editing) to WordPress (for blogging as well as for website creation).  Some of these (like Audacity and WordPress) were quite familiar to me and my VA.  Others, like Notepad++ were new to us and very intriguing.  My VA has downloaded it and is exploring its features, especially for greater ease in editing html code.

What I loved about this article is that Michelle not only shares her favorites, but also lists some places where you can check back for ongoing developments in the free and open-source software worlds.  Open source software is related to the free software movement and is basically intended to allow software to be available for free and to be developed and modified in an open, community-based environment.

By the way, the open source and free software movements offer fascinating glimpses into the politics of the internet.  I would definitely suggest that you set a timer if you are going to start exploring this interesting and sometimes contentious history.  If you don’t, you may be ‘lost in cyberspace’ for quite some time!

Here at The Time Finder we have bookmarked Open Source Windows, Open Source Mac, and Open Source Alternative to keep up on the latest developments on the free and open source software fronts.

Ready to explore free and open source software alternatives?  I think you’ll find some interesting options if you do, this Cyber Monday!
