Morning, Evening, Aging and Time’s Mysteries

Precious Life Time Mysteries
Your time choices matter…

Aging is one of time’s inevitabilities as well as one of time’s mysteries.

The years go by and we progress through ever-evolving developmental stages.

Step-by-step we move through time. Our changes are often mundane and incremental. And ultimately, they are breathtakingly profound.

We go from 14 to 40 to 74, but what does that mean inside? Morning comes.  Then evening comes. But where do they come from and where do they go?

So often, when you think of time management, your focus is on what you do with your mornings, evenings, and years. But have you ever thought about what they are? Or about how you relate to them?

Well, those are questions of a different order.

So, this morning, I awoke to one of those beautiful, clear early spring days that I associate with life in New Hampshire. Snow and mud are about equally mixed in the woods and fields around the farm. But you can hear the birds returning and feel the promise of sunlight on your skin.

I think back to other such mornings and wonder how many lie ahead. And I can’t help but pause for a moment and think about the mysteries of time?

Time’s mysteries…

Indeed, our days go round and around. When you are quiet you hear the clock ticking. You see the morning light move up the windowpane. And then you see the evening light move down. As I age, I notice changes. Something is happening, and something is moving, but what?

Whether we measure our days and years by clocks and calendars, or by the position of the sun, we all exist in time.

It feels a little like a river that carries us. Sometimes, when I meditate, I experience a slowing down of time — or so it feels to me. Then, when I’m stressed or nervous about something, I could swear that time speeds up.

Here’s what we know…

But what is it? Well, so here are a few things we know about time:

  • Time is absolute, concrete and universal. We live within the time we have. There is no more and there is no less.
  • Time is the great equalizer. No matter who we are or what we do, we each receive this precious gift of time. And we receive it for the entire span of our lives.
  • Once we spend time, it is gone. Lost opportunities may be followed by new ones, but those particular opportunities are gone for all time.

As I think about time’s mysteries this day, I think about a poem by Emily Dickinson — one of my favorites:

Will there really be a ‘Morning’?
by Emily Dickinson

Will there really be a “Morning”?
Is there such a thing as “Day”?
Could I see it from the mountains
If I were as tall as they?

Has it feet like Water lilies?
Has it feathers like a Bird?
Is it brought from famous countries
Of which I have never heard?

Oh some Scholar! Oh some Sailor!
Oh some Wise Man from the skies!
Please to tell a little Pilgrim
Where the place called “Morning” lies!
