Multitasking, Focus, and Making the Most of Your On-Line Time

Multitasking woman

Multitasking just doesn’t help.

Multitasking and working on-line are not a helpful combination, and yet it’s something that many of us are tempted to do.

In fact, finding focus and maintaining it when you’re working on the web is a major challenge. Couple that with the myth that multitasking is helpful, and you have a recipe for disaster.

I recently explored some of the myths about multitasking in the Finding Time E-zine. If you’d like to listen now, just click the link to access the audio of my article titled Here’s the Surprising Truth About Multitasking.”

The reality is that you nearly always lose something when you are multitasking. And constantly shifting your focus when you’re working on-line is an excellent example of the multitasking trap.

3 Quick Tips for Finding Focus and Saving Time

  1. Close your email, messaging and feeds to maintain focus.
  2.  Whatever task you’re focusing on, set time parameters and stick to them.
  3. Keep your promise to yourself. Maintain your focus and then return to your e-mail or to items of interest later, in time you set aside for that.

This is important…

This last item – keeping your promise to yourself – is key.  When setting any time boundary, whether it’s an internal boundary or one that involves others, your follow-through is what builds trust and ensures that your boundary will “hold.”  If you tell yourself that you’ll go back to something, and then you don’t, you’re less likely to maintain that boundary the next time you need it.
