Prioritizing saves you time and energy.

Prioritizing your tasks isn’t just about managing time. It’s also a key skill to enlist for managing your energy.

It’s one of the best pathways to success that I can think of. And believe it or not, prioritizing can also be fun.

Step back and think about what an ideal beginning to your day would look and feel like.

This is going to be unique for each of us. But here are two things that most all of our ideal days will have in common:

  • We can see the path ahead, and
  • That path includes activities that are in sync with our priorities.

When you’re starting from that point of clarity, even setbacks and surprises feel manageable. With your priorities clear and your plan in place, you know that the most important tasks will get accomplished, no matter what.

So, you come to your day with confidence, knowing that you’ll have the time and energy for your top priorities. Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

Prioritizing is a Heart-Based Time Management™ Tool.

You enjoy significant benefits when prioritizing is part of your skill set, and it has a significant impact on your energy. Prioritizing is a lifelong linking of your heart, your mind, and your responsiveness to ongoing change. So, when you practice this skill you feel:

  • Relaxed.  When your priorities are clear, you’re at peace with what comes first and what can wait.
  • Safe.  You’ve weighed the options objectively, so your time choices are firmly grounded in reality.
  • Confident.  Your skill at prioritizing helps you remain agile and responsive to new situations. No matter what, you’re calm, alert and resourceful.

2 More Benefits of Prioritizing:

  • Your time is uncluttered.  When you prioritize, you simplify. Decisiveness strengthens your “prioritizing muscles.”
  • You experience inner abundance.  Heart-based prioritizing brings fulfillment because ‘success’ is grounded in self-reference.

Here are 2 Basic Prioritizing Tools

Prioritizing skills can be developed in small, workable steps. Here are 2 essential tools to start with:

Due Dates

I prefer to think in terms of “due dates” rather than “deadlines.” Using due dates helps focus your mind. This powerful-yet-simple tool encourages you to confront and overcome obstacles as you move toward your top priority.

Obstacles might well include distractions that appeal to you. When you identify them as threats to your success, you assign them a lower priority. Thanks to your prioritizing and your due date, you’ve given yourself a destination and a clear path to follow.

A “dependency” is a person whose participation you need in order to reach your goals. It’s important to factor in dependencies when you’re prioritizing tasks.

So, let’s say that you collaborate with multiple departments at work. You set up budgets annually, and you need to obtain figures from the finance department to get started. Since they generally take three weeks, prioritize your request so that you make it well in advance of your due date. This ensures that you get the necessary information in plenty of time.

Of course, others depend on YOU, as well. Maybe your daughter needs a costume for her school play. So you give this task top priority.  Your heart-based connection to your child and her reliance on you anchor this priority’s importance as you plan your time and energy.
