Procrastination clogging your time?

Procrastination trips up lots and lots of people every single day. If you’re one of them, you’re certainly not alone.

In fact, I think it’s safe to say that procrastination is one of the biggest and most common time and energy drains going. It’s a discouraging and damaging habit — BUT there’s good news!

Procrastination doesn’t happen to you; it’s a time choice that you make.

Now maybe that doesn’t sound like good news at first — but bear with me!

The good news here is that procrastination isn’t out of your control at all. Since it’s a time choice, it’s a choice that you can change!

I’m very excited to be putting the finishing touches on a new time tool all about procrastination and how to stop letting it clog up your time. (Watch for it on November 3rd!) And in the meantime, I want to share 3 tips to help you, right now, get yourself unstuck and moving again!

3 Procrastination Tips to Unclog Your Day Right Now!

Start where you are. How are you feeling in this moment?

  • You can’t get from Point A to Point B if you don’t know where Point A is. Think about setting out for a trip in your car and switching on your GPS. The very first thing it wants to know where you are starting!
  • When you do this, also pay attention to patterns. Your energy isn’t uniform or steady throughout your day. It ebbs and flows. So, knowing when you are usually low on energy gives you a great clue about when not to ask yourself to be productive.
  • This applies to your work life and your emotional life, too. Paying attention to yourself and how you are feeling is a practice that helps you nip procrastination in the bud.

Be real about what’s possible.

  • This tip, coupled with the first, sets you up for success. If you bite off more than you can chew you are introducing overwhelm into your day and are likely going to rebel somehow (enter procrastination).
  • So scale your plans to your energy level, the time available, and other constraints that you are aware of. And remember, you can always ‘chunk’ your tasks (break them up into smaller pieces).
  • Making sure that you’re being realistic means that you’re much less likely to be fighting yourself along the way.

Give yourself a pat on the back when you follow through on what you’d planned.

  • This may be the most important tip of all — no matter what time challenge you’re facing! When you acknowledge and reward your accomplishments you are behaving as a friend to yourself – rather than a critical and demanding task master. This always yields better results than goading or berating yourself will!

So, if procrastination is something that clogs up the works for you, I hope you’ll give these three tips a try. They really do help.
