When you’re rushing from one task to another, how do you give yourself a quick energy boost?

Well, the most efficient and effective route to more energy involves spending some energy.

How?

By exercising.

But making time for exercise can sometimes feel like trying to squeeze your foot into a shoe that’s too small.

And that may be especially true at busy times of the year like the approaching holiday season. So, as we move toward that time, I want to share 3 important reminders with you.

  • Finding time for exercise is important. Making your exercise time a top priority means that YOU are a top priority. This is a crucial shift in your mindset and, all by itself, it gives you an energy boost.
  • Your exercise doesn’t have to be intense and the time doesn’t have to be long. Thinking that you have to exercise for a set amount of time or at a particular intensity creates barriers for you. This is especially daunting when available time is in short supply, or when our strength and endurance are affected by things like aging or injury or illness. Remember that ANY amount of exercise helps.
  • EVERY time you exercise, you will boost your energy. No matter how much time you spend and how intense your exercise is, it always makes a difference.  As my grandmother used to say, “Every little bit helps.”

Finding time for exercise is important.

If you make exercise a priority, you are more likely to find time for it.  And if you find yourself losing perspective and getting swallowed up in everyday demands, remind yourself of the benefits. They are so great and so palpable: This is always worth doing.

Long or short, heavy or light, your exercise time will enhance your energy. It’s more important to do something than to worry about how long you do it.

  • If you only have 5 or 10 minutes, don’t let that stop you.
  • Maybe you can’t lift your usual amount of weight, don’t let that stop you.
  • Don’t have your running shoes? Don’t let that stop you.

Something is much better than nothing.

EVERY time you exercise you give yourself an energy boost. This is something you’ve got to experience to understand.  The energy boost comes from a variety of sources, I believe.  One is the purely physical rush, which will leave you feeling better, more focused, and ready to move forward into the rest of your day.  Other boosts come from the great feeling of having followed through on a commitment to yourself.  When you do that you build self-trust and send yourself a powerful, self-nurturing message.

Try setting aside some time to exercise.  Build it into your routine in whatever increments make sense for you.

It doesn’t have to be a LOT of time, JUST DO IT (as the slogan goes).
