Responding to Change Keeps You In the Game

Agility Forward Flexibility

Responding to change requires agility.

Responding to change requires agility and acceptance.

It can be a challenge, and the more adept you are at responding to change, the more present you will be in your life.

This weekend we may have our first significant frost here in New Hampshire.  It has been so temperate, to this point, that many plants and flowers I associate with late summer are still gracing our gardens here and there.

But soon, the cosmos will likely be gone, and the pumpkins will be frost-covered.

Responding to Change:

Many view time management as about organization, planning, and controlling their time. These are not bad goals by any means. However, life is always bigger than personal plans. The skills involved in responding to change are different than typical time management skills. But they are just as important.

Whether changes are predictable, like the frost this weekend, or unpredictable, like a sudden illness or an accident, they can throw your plans out of sync. And, of course, changes aren’t just negative.  Something like an unexpected windfall or a new friend still presents something new in our lives and asks us to adjust.

As Charles Darwin noted, “It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.” So in some upcoming posts, I’ll be exploring this subject further.

And for now, I’d just ask you to reflect. What kinds of changes did you encounter this week?  What do you anticipate that you’ll need to adjust to this weekend?
