Set Smart Priorities Using This Quick Visualization Exercise

And set smart priorities…

Decluttering your to-do list is very often a matter of learning to set smart priorities. And like all skills, the more you practice the more ‘muscle’ you develop.

Ultimately, when you set smart priorities your actions are more in sync with your goals and values. You’re more productive and you feel more satisfied as you move through your day.

So, part of what you are doing when you set priorities is choosing which consequences you can live with, and which you can’t.

These choices inevitably involve some letting go and acceptance.  Learning your limits promotes maturity and resolve. That’s so important.

But saying it’s important doesn’t mean it’s easy. So, if you struggle with this, you’ll appreciate this simple but effective exercise.

Set Smart Priorities Using Visualization

Compare the consequences that you’ll experience if you do or don’t follow-through on competing priorities. Try visualizing the consequences in three different timeframes. Let’s say in 2 days, 2 weeks and 2 years

This helps concretize the consequences and often will quickly clarify how to set smart priorities. So, ask yourself what will be the outcome of selecting one option over the alternative?

  • How will this work out in 2 days?
  • In 2 weeks?
  • What about in 2 years?

Comparing consequences over multiple time spans gives you a richer understanding of the life you are shaping through your choices. And depending on the particular tasks in question, you may find different time spans more meaningful.

Answer important questions…

What seems urgent at present may fade in importance, as you consider other long-range needs. Fantasizing the future can be a very powerful time tool that helps clarify your best choice for right now.

As you add to your prioritizing skills by implementing this visualization, see how it can guide you through the day.
