Small Steps Get You to Your Goal — Just Ask a Marathoner

Your small steps will carry you…

Small steps are the increments that carry you to big transformations. But do you celebrate those steps? I mean those incremental ones that move you from where you are to where you’d like to be.

You see, incremental work is powerful, and it’s also some of the hardest work you’ll ever do. Why is that?

Think about a runner training for a marathon. Each step she takes builds toward her ultimate goal. Each of those small steps counts.

Or, remember the adage, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”?  Think about how it was actually built — brick-by-brick.  Imagine the challenge of keeping sight of the goal while stacking brick upon brick upon brick for months on end.

So it is for us, very often, as we build toward our most valued and biggest goals.

Three Tips for Small Steps

Here are 3 things to keep in mind as you implement the small steps you’ve laid out for reaching your goal, whatever it may be:

  • When you start out, remember that finding time to reach your goal probably involves changing your time priorities, setting time boundaries, and letting go of some old habits around time.  This can all be disruptive at first.  Give yourself and your loved ones time to adjust as you make this transition in your life.
  • Be sure to recognize and reward the small steps and incremental accomplishments that move you toward your larger goal. This is very, very important!  It can be easy to feel like you aren’t getting anywhere at the beginning when you feel like all you are doing is drudgery. Don’t worry, as you carry bricks or accumulate miles of running, you’ll begin to see your goal becoming more real. And in the meantime, with each of those small steps, give yourself plenty of pats on the back.
  • As important as it is to reward yourself, it is also very important to stick with your plan.  If you notice that you are veering way off track, take time to take stock.  Maybe you need to adjust your plan.  It’s important to do this consciously. If you simply ignore your plans and change course without checking in with yourself, you erode self-trust.

Making your goals into realities…

This is one of my passions – helping people find (and stay on) the path to transforming their goals into realities. This path of transformation is one of the most exciting and doable journeys you will ever take.

So, here are some questions to ponder:

  • Have you already set some big goals for yourself?
  • If you haven’t, what do you think is keeping you from doing that?
  • And if you have, what are 3 small steps that will start moving you toward your goal?
  • Have you decided when to get started? If so, mark it on your calendar.
  • How do you feel as you take those steps? Be sure to reward yourself and reflect and adjust as needed.
