The Solstice, A Seasonal Change to Savor and Celebrate

The Solstice – a rhythm to celebrate.

The Solstices represent a profound transition that happens twice every year.

The Winter Solstice brings the shortest day.

And Summer Solstice brings the longest day, marking a deep rhythm in our collective lives.

So, do you pause and celebrate these changes?

You can count on the Solstice.

Whether you live in the Northern or Southern Hemisphere, the Solstices arrive like clockwork.

They mark the earth’s nearest and farthest distances from the sun.

And in-between the Solstices, the earth swings back to its Equinox. That’s the Center. Light and dark are in balance.

So, the Solstices are part of a deep and dependable mystery, this great migration of the spheres. And you have to wonder about the impact that these transitions have on our energy.

Slow down and savor…

Now, I invite you to pause in your busy day and take note.  Let it in, the quality of the light, the energy of the moment.

As Pablo Neruda wrote:

“Green was the silence, wet was the light, the month of June trembled like a butterfly.”

Here in the North, we mark, today, the longest day of our year.  In New Hampshire, it’s usually hot as the high summer sun bakes the earth. Then, from here the days get shorter ’til they find their balance again at the Autumn Equinox. And then they move further into darkness as winter draws near.

Meanwhile, in the South, it’s the Winter Solstice that arrives.  With the darkest day comes the promise of the return of the light, incrementally, from the Solstice onward.

Don’t forget the dark…

It’s easy to celebrate the light, that powerful energy that warms us and makes things grow.  But the dark offers gifts, insights, and energies that the light cannot.

So here’s a poem about the dark, by one of my all-time favorite poets, Wendell Berry.  It’s called “To Know the Dark.”

To go in the dark with a light is to know the light.
To know the dark, go dark. Go without sight,
and find that the dark, too, blooms and sings,
and is traveled by dark feet and dark wings.
